Trip Odometer Reset Problem

I use my trip odometer all the time, I keep track of every 400 miles with it for chain maintenance mostly but today when I reset it, it didn't turn (it wouldn't register that I was traveling a distance) it just stayed at 000.0 miles. At a red light I pressed the reset button again but still nothing. The next red light I spammed the reset button and pressed it really hard a couple of times. This sort of worked, the tenth mile spinner registered, but the rest didn't (... 0.8 miles, 0.9, 0.0, 0.1...) Finally I got to my destination and spammed it one more time and now it finally seems to be working okay, I read this about defects which mentioned a similar problem, but a solution was not presented that assisted me

Anyone else have this problem before or any ideas on how to fix it? I'm going to see if I can get some WD-40 in there some how just for the sake of doing it. This is the first time I've had this happen

In the past did you happen to press the button while in motion? If I remember right, the gears it uses are plastic and pressing the reset button while the odometer is moving can damage the gears.

I was thinking this may be the case but I honestly do not remember. I'd assume I didn't because this thought would have crossed my mind before I did it, but I won't rule out the possibility. Do you know if this is an easy fix?

Here's that thread about it, but it doesn't have a solution either, just an explanation.

Don't push your trip button in motion

Thanks Alex! Not sure why I didn't see that one in my search, guess I'll have to be the guinea pig for this one and see if I can find a solution! I completely forgot to look at it as I rode this morning, but I'll take a look after class, if it's still working, I'm not going to mess with it (though if it's stripped gears I'd imagine the chances of it alternating between slipping and working is fairly high) if there are still problems though, I'll see what I can do to get to it, I'll even call and see if by some random stroke of luck Kawasaki has a solution for me.
