Thankful this is not the crash thread
Just thought I'd post this little acknowledgement of appreciation for this site. I was riding my Duc at twilight today. I was on a road that is speed limited to 30mph. I was doing no more than 35 (probably more like 32 or 33).
Anywho, an SUV decides to make an attempt of pulling out in front of me. He/she was entering my road from a side street running perpendicular to the road I was traveling. Thanks to a post a little while ago by that loser @CC Cowboy I was riding with two fingers guarding the front brake. CC said he does this while riding on the street. (Correct me if I am mistaken, Mr. Cowboy.) I thought it seemed like a good idea. So I've been doing it. Sometimes with one finger on the front brake, but this time I had two. As the SUV pulled out I was all prepared for a quick brake application, which was performed. Turns out that the SUV finally sees me and stops only 1/3 of the way into my lane. By then I was traveling quite slowly and just mini-swerved around it. But he/she could have easily continued into my lane. Moral: Even though Ninjette.org is populated with malcontents, as a group this site has some strange way of becoming far more than its flawed pieces. Thanks to all you more experienced riders for giving us less experienced riders great info. All kidding aside, I love you, man. |

Isn't that called "attack position"? I thought it was a motocross thing, but I do it too. Glad you made it past without incident.
For me, I think one or two fingers on the front brake is good for city streets. You never know when some dingus is going to do exactly what your Suburban driver did.

I guess I should clarify: I often rode with my brakes covered, always have. However, I think I have gotten lazy about it lately and have been doing it less and less.
You know the thinking, "Nobody's pulled out in front of me in like 1500 miles, why would anyone do it at 1501 miles". Bad thinking. CC reminded me of the importance of doing this. Now, I am doing it the vast majority of the time again. Always good to be reminded of the basics! |
