Diablo 3

I've just about finished downloading Diablo 3 (prepurchase predownload) and I'm pretty excited to play it on the 15th. I played Diablo 1 before I had internet and man that game used to scare the **** out of me. Then Diablo 2 I played with friends all the time, until my account got hacked

So anyone else getting it?

I still own D2. I have been wanting to install it on my computer again. It was such an awesome game. My little brother and I used to escort people through places for fun.

As far as D3 goes, I am excited to see how well it does.

As for casters, they are a pain to level, but once they are leveled, they are powerful...

I never got into Diablo II online. I only really started playing it about three or four years ago. I never really had a suitable PC until then so that's the main reason for that.

I am excited to start playing some D3 and I have a few friends who are getting it as well.

It kinda sucks that they knocked multiplayer down to 4 players instead of 8. Should have done at least 5 so you could play with a party that has all the characters but meh.

How do you like it? How is it different from D2?

I'm curious. Though I'm planning to wait for first patch to try it out.

Moving around is kinda hard for me because its essentially the opposite of SC2. Right click to move and A + Left click to attack, in Diablo is left click to move and right click to attack! Ughness!

I don't know why I bothered to pre-order. I still can't even connect to Battle.Net. I shouldn't be surprised as it is typical Blizzard BS.

Yeah, their servers have some major issues.
I still got over 10 hours in today, so I wouldn't go as far as saying why pre-order.

I picked up the game after work. I installed it. I tried to play it. I couldn't connect to the servers.

I then worked out for about an hour and a half, rode my bike to a friend's place of employment to discuss some Diablo 3 and then went for a short 30 minute joy ride before returning home, and then finally I meet another friend to see Avengers for the second time (in 3-D woot! first ever 3-D movie) and then get home a bit before 12 AM.

So all my pre-order did was ensure that I had a copy of a game that I could digitally download anytime I wanted it anyway that I have yet to play.

Glad you guys got some playtime in. I'm really rethinking purchasing Heart of the Swarm. I'm tired of Blizzard. They knew they were going to get hit hard with this game. Did they learn nothing from every expansion and major patch issue they had with WoW?

I'll be the first to admit that I am a sucker for a great game, but after a while the crap just gets old. Next time I'll skip the pre-order and tell myself release day is two weeks from the actual date and then maybe I can play the damn game after I install it.

This happens to every big game upon release....it isn't surprising. The fact that the servers were up and relatively stable for quite a long time is actually the most surprising thing.

Ok so, something has been bothering me about this game and its attack speed vs. DPS. I've done some searching and haven't found any conclusive answers so I decided to find out for myself. All of our skills are based on weapon damage, but how is weapon damage calculated? If I do 200% weapon damage with a dagger as opposed to a mace, which will do more?

Dagger 1.5 attack speed
10-20 damage
DPS: 22.5
Avg damage/attack = 15

Mace 0.9 attack speed
20-30 damage
DPS: 22.5
Avg damage/attack = 25

So when I use a skill that expands on weapon damage, it must be expanding on damage/attack not DPS right? As such, slower weapons with higher damage/attack will increase all of your skill damage. This is I think most important for the casters. As a wizard, most of my spells are based on attack speed. With basic attack spells, it wouldn't really matter, I'm going to do the same DPS either way. But with stronger attacks that I launch off less frequently, bigger weapon damage is better. The draw back of a slower attack speed weapon is that I can't launch skills as quickly, there is more of a delay.

Now there are also other attacks I have that are more spammable as seen in the video below. I noticed that my arcane power disappeared faster when using fast attack speed weapons and slower when using slow attack speed weapons.

Link to original page on YouTube.

So now the question is, what's a better weapon to use for this skill? It seems that skill is repeating itself, using 20 arcane power based on the attack speed times. So the dagger is essentially using 30 arcane power per second to do 1.5 attacks and the mace is using 18 arcane power per second to do 0.9 attacks. Now the question is, since the DPS of the weapons is the same, is the DPS of disintegrate and attacks like it the same? I made another video to test it and it seems like yes the DPS is the same, the dagger just uses arcane power less efficiently.

Now where the dagger hold an advantage is when you add other items that add straight damage. With the dagger, all those damages are multiplied by 1.5, whereas with the mace, they are multiplied by 0.9 into your DPS.

I'll post the other vid when I get a chance to edit it, it also shows in it that weapon damage is based on DPA not DPS, which makes sense.

Yeah i messed around with a stave and 1h + off hand on my witch doctor a few times to see if there was a huge difference. Like you've discovered i had higher damage output with the 2 hander, but when i played next to another witch doctor the speed difference was VERY noticeable. It also seems like faster dmg output despite slightly less damage per hit makes up for itself because of it being faster. I'm sure if someone made a spreadsheet and looked at every possible item combination they could tell you what best in slot would be, but with all the different random enchantments + sockets it's really hard to define which is better. I guess it mostly comes down to play style and which spells you use.

Thats exactly what I said, the DPS would be the same for skills that don't have a cool down but slower weapons make more use of your magic. For instance the dagger and mace I had, the mace needs 18 arcane power to deal full damage, but the dagger needs 30 arcane power to deal full damage. So, while they cause the same DPS the mace is more effective because it uses less energy for the same damage.
