DJ Needles instead of shimming

i just bought a dyno jet kit... but the more i research the more i think i might just shim my bike. it idles and starts off choke.
I was going to try one washer, but can i just swap my stock needle with my DJ needle and put the E clip on the third groove? Or does that mean i have to re jet the mains if i switch needles?

im thinking the 12's might have had some revision, because it has a smooth power band without any hesitation.

stock jetting is pretty smooth. lacks top end power though. you can swap needles just fine, and the clip on those needles is equivalent to adding washers. slight difference would be the needle taper but you're getting into very tiny differences in effect at that point. even with a stock exhaust you can rejet to get better performance, but a full pipe with a proper jetting will get you the best bang

yeah, i have the kit, i really dont want to rip the whole carb out...
stock is 96 correct? so i might just do the third clip and move to a 98 main... idk what the drill bit is for though.
I feel that all i need is a slightly richer setting... i did the 15t front sprocket so i think thats why i feel like my bottom end power is lacking, the bike runs perfect though.

I'm all sorts of confused now from reading this thread. Do you still shim even with the DJ kit? Stupid question, but I thought I would ask.

The DJ kit comes with two washers per needle. Thats so you can do fine adjustments of the needle, instead of a large clip change.

Correct but stock is a Kehlin (or something like that).
However that does equate to a DynoJet 96 main (correct me if wrong, that's what I was told).
