Just bought used, what should I do to ensure a healthy engine?

Hi guys,

Noob alert. I'm new to motorcycles and doing my own work. I am quite capable of it, just don't know what's good/bad/better etc..

I bought a used 08 with 17,000km, claimed oil changes every 5000km, claimed carbs and valves done in December.. The bike is pretty well mint condition, coming from a reliable bike mechanic, so I know it was at least taken care of.

However, I want to make sure it's brought up to spec and healthy... What should I do before I start riding it? Oil change and chain lube obviously, anything else? I saw at the store carb cleaner spray, oil flush/clean, fuel additives and a bunch of other stuff.. Should I use any of these? Any brands?

Should I replace the spark plugs too?

Thanks for the advice

Posts: A lot.
I would certainly lube the chain, change the oil and filter (might be a good time to change to synthetic), lube the cables, and check the tyre pressure. Sounds like a great bike---enjoy.

I would stay away from additives/carb cleaners, etc. They are a lot of hype. I would only use a gasoline additive if the bike is stored--I recommend "Star-Tron"

Hope that helps. Ride Safe.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice! Unfortunately I can't ride at all until I do the safety course, in two week, so I certainly will!

Do all the maintenance and then wax the hell out of it--make it shine. Rim tape is also a good thing especially if it is reflective.

That's the plan! Know a good wax?

I use Honda Pro Polish. Works well with plastic.

And let me tell you, it makes a world of difference! Also, get the front forks under control. Depending on your body weight the stock springs and oil are worthless, almost dangerous. For me at 250-260 geared-up the stock fork compressed so badly as to make the rear brake useless. If you want the $15 method or the $130 method let me know and I can tell you what I did.
