Not sure about the bar ends, but many screws on the Ninja's are really JIS and not Phillips heads. There are many threads that talk about the difference between the two standards as well as the difficulty of removing bar ends.

They are JIS but you can use a #3 phillips. You have to use a torch to heat up the bar end since they use red locktite on the screw.

Definitely read the "similar threads" listed at the bottom of this page for some hints and tips with this. Things do not get easier if you do end up stripping them.

I would advise just using a 1/4 inch bit and drilling the head off the screw. then use vise grips and remove the screw if you still need to. saved me some cussing

My 2011 bar ends came off with #3 philips that I have that isn't pointy. It fit pretty snug. I used it with a ratchet, and they came out pretty easily. I was able to hold the ratchet against the bar end and used my other hand to use the leverage of the ratchet handle. I did not have to use heat.

Stripped the hell out of my right side before I found my butane torch in my toolshed...Even with it stripped to hell, the heat made it a breeze to get it off! You have to get it pretty hot...I've read trying a soldering iron (this will not work)....definitely need a torch! (or drill)
