how to do a proper full tuck?
How do you guys/gals do your full tuck? Is your chin supposed to be resting on the tank? I can’t seem to do this because after lowering my chin that low, it seems that the top inside part of the helmet starts to block my vision. Any one else have this problem or is it just me? I also wear thick plastic framed glasses that probably obstructs my vision as well when trying to lower my head. So in order for me to be able to see properly, I have to keep my head up at a slight angle which wears out my neck after a while and makes tucking not so fun or comfortable.
I have clipons and adjustable rearsets. My knees are placed around the sides of the tank. I rest the balls of my feet on the pegs and sit about 3” from the tank. My arms are relaxed and parallel with the bars. Elbows tucked in towards the body. My chest is resting on the tank pad region. So am I doing something wrong with my body position? Any tips helpful tips appreciated. |

You need to push the chin into the tank to push the helmet up to allow you to see. Lower pegs and bars help.

seems so obvious, but i've never tried to actually push my helmet with the tank. i've always only gently rested my chin on the tank. sometimes i'd take my hand off the clutch and push my helmet up. i will give it a try on the way home today. thanks for the tip.

Pushing the helmet up with the left hand will also improve the aerodynamics. Looks cool also.

Helmet doesn't fit right?
My Shoei has a lip on it that is supposed to make holding my head up easier from the aerodynamics. Some of that high end gear is worth while sometimes. I wear oakleys in the helmet and can see right out the windows on both bikes in full tuck.

I have a scorpion helmet and it works on most bikes. Unless they have a dent on top the tank .then you have to push it up with the hands

I normally only go into a true full tuck on the race track and only on the straight. The reason for this is in order to achieve a true full tuck I am not actually looking straight ahead. I get lined up on the straight and tuck down in the bubble. When I am tucked I can only see about 4 or 5 bike lengths in front of my bike so I am actually using my peripherals to watch for my brake marker. Do not do this on the street! You will die!

getting my 6 foot body folded up had been the biggest challenge. in Land speed racing it is all about the tuck these are some shots from 2009 and 2010.
I will get the shots from this year next week. |

Being 5'5" does make it easier. I have an 09 ZX-6R, and I race the 250. On the track the 250 is just as fun as any supersport. It's just not as fast on the straights.

I did a weekend of track days in July. Brought my Aprilia and my 250. Out of the entire weekend, I only did 2 sessions on the Aprilia. The 250 is just way too much fun (and much more comfortable!). On the tuck, just get down as far as you can. Can't imagine what you really need that for on the street though.

I can get into a full tuck, on the highway and have plenty of view ahead. I have a Xpeed helmet, big field of view.

Three problems when tucking on the street. 1 you can't see that well. 2 you can't be seen as well 3 you look like you are speeding if a cop sees you.and you look silly I know that is four.

Yeah, I can see that. Guess it never really seemed necessary on a bike that tops out at 90

agreed for the most part, but on those days when the wind is really beating you up, it's a lot safer tucking. i don't see how you can be pulled over for "looking like you are going fast." i've driven past cops tucked before and they haven't ever stopped me yet. they were probably like, "it's only a 250, he probably tops out at 60 mph."

Ya its not like you cant see. It is just that the higher your eyes are the more you can see. But you don't tuck in bumper to bumper traffic at low speed.
Cops are some times prejudiced against sport bikes and just look for an excuse. Definitely in the wind . You want to get you shoulders out of the wind. |

well first you wrap the entire thing in duct tape. then you tuck it and tape it back. make sure you shave the area so the duct tape doesn't fall off. wouldn't want that happening while you're shakin your thang.
oh wait, you're talking about...

Haha. Since I ride nekkid (no relation to the above post, wherever that was going), and being 6'2", the wind beyond about 50mph makes me feel like I'm wearing a parachute. I actually shaved the foam of my seat, effectively moving that little hump that divides the driver and rider seats on the pre-gen, so I could get a little more room as well. Helps me get a little lower into the tuck. And from my experience, full tuck on a 250 does help with headwinds at highway speeds, as well as minimizing cross-winds.

i tuck because 1) it becomes a little bit less noisy, 2) the crosswinds don't affect me as much, and 3) because I'm short and it's pretty comfortable laying on the tank lol

It may be placebo, but I'm pretty darned sure the bike accelerates much better at highway speeds when I'm in a full tuck. With so little power, we have to make the most of it.
For absolute sure I get better fuel economy when I tuck. I do it on the highway pretty much any time I'm at 60 or better. Re how to do it... I've found that when I put my helmet on it's possible to position it differently depending on where I place the chin strap. Maybe it's just the shape of my chin/neck, but it's secure either way for whatever reason. I can put it on in the rakish and cool-looking lowbrow position, where my eyes are towards the top of the port (good for blocking sun) or by positioning my eyes in the center of the port. The former gives me the same challenge the OP has, but the latter allows me to get into that full tuck and still see ahead. My biggest issue is that I wear glasses... I actually wear an old pair when I ride because they have a better vertical field of view. |
