E-Bike in China

The electric bike is replacing bicycles and cars in China.

"The real sweet spot will be if China's e-bike explosion leads to the development of electric cars and the infrastructure for charging these e-vehicles," said Alex Wang of the Natural Resources Defense Council office in Beijing, and an avid e-biker. "China is probably better positioned to make this leap than any other country in the world."
Sadly the bold area is probably correct. Nothing against China, but you would think that some of the more built up countries that have a better electrical system in place would be first. I guess more power to them (in several ways).

E-bike in china

Eibikes will improve local air quality, energy efficiency, and GHG emissions in Vietnam (perhaps also improving cost effectiveness of travel and safety at the same time). Introducing e-vehicles into the cities will increase lead pollution, simply because most current e-scooters use large lead batteries.

Lead batteries should push recycling jobs to be created, there is always a lot of material left when the lead acid cells are no longer working. You just need to rebuild them to make new batteries. A new thriving industry?

Lithium (of some kind) will be the almost certain future since they are lighter and stronger, but I'm, not sure how much can be recycled from the spent cells.

The new battery tech should be out very soon ie a few years. Using Nano tubes the batteries are said to be able to carry the ultimate charge. All I know about them it that they are really light. Charge capacity when I read the article said that a single lap top battery would be able to power a computer for 40 hours on a single charge. I think once batteries like that are available the electric vehicle market may finally take off.

^ yup. And it isn't like we can't have performance electric vehicles. Although hot rodders will be pissed since the grumble of their engines may be replaced with a humm of an electric drive.

When you have no central power grid or governing authority, it's much simpler to impose a new standard and build from scratch than it is to convert long standing infrastructure into something it was never intended to be.
