Relevant text ads.
It shouldn't be fresh news to anyone that your internet browsing habits are being tracked and recorded. It shouldn't be fresh news that your emails are filtered and analyzed by automated computer algorithms to identify patterns and monitor the content within the messages.
These are the reasons that the sidebar ads and banner ads you see from time to time are aimed directly at you and your interests. For example, at the bottom of this page there are ads for 250r footpegs on revzilla, and motorcycle insurance in hawaii at the top of the page. However from time to time, the automated scripts that generate the ads and their placement get things horribly (or more commonly, humorously) wrong. Yesterday I was greeted with a banner ad for "nobushlotion.com" -- and it was telling me "go hairless. get faster." I read about a lawsuit several years ago in which target had sent coupons for diapers and baby lotions to a young girl. Her father was enraged and took target to court for something about encouraging his daughter to be promiscuous, and halfway through the case his daughter offered up the information that she 'was' pregnant to her father -- who promptly dropped all charges. Turns out target had mapped an accurate picture of the girl's condition based on her internet search history.

I'm finding the ads to be much less relevant after moving the site over to SSL. I have some theories, but haven't gotten confirmation yet in my searching on the topic so far.

Last night the banner ad told me "You'll feel better after israel." Something told me this thread wasn't going to click with anyone or get any interest.
Also looking at '10k single chinese girls', '39/day and we deliver moped rental', and 'PC safeguard free download.'

To be fair it wasn't based on her internet search history, it was based on the products she has bought from target

^^^ More specifically based on her browsing history on the target website logged in from her IP address and username/password for her target account.
You can read about it in 'the power of habit'
