Michelin Pilot Power 3 and Supersport Tire Review

New 2CT+carcass construction, profiles and tread patternsMichelin opted out of Sport Rider’s 2012 street tire comparison test (Absolutely tired, December 2012) but pledged that it would release a competitive tire shortly after the test concluded. That tire, the Pilot Power 3, is now available for purchase and was just recently mounted to a wide-ranging fleet of test bikes as part of the company’s all-encompassing press introduction in Portimao, Portugal. All-encompassing because Michelin released its all-new Power SuperSport and Anakee III adventure-touring tire during the same event.

The Michelin Pilot Power 3 replaces the Power Pure and benefits from a new 2CT+ carcass construction out back, which runs the long-wearing medium compound underneath the softer compound on the shoulders for increased stability, especially when accelerating out of a corner. The rear tire is further updated by way of a 25/50/25 soft/ medium compound profile ratio, which replaces the Power Pure rear tire’s 40/20/40 spread. Shared changes between the front and rear Pilot Power 3 are minimal, but both buns do run revamped-for-2013 profiles and a new tread pattern with slicker shoulders for increased grip; Michelin claims that the Pilot Power 3 is geared toward 85 percent street riding and 15 percent track riding.
