measuring stock valve shims...

Hello all, Been working on the 2010 ninja; bike currently has 10K miles and hadnt been run since 2017. Bought it for my son a couple of years ago, he rec'd his "real" license for a cage and the ninja got parked. I pulled it out of the garage to clean up the carbs and get it running for my older daughter who wants to start riding. Cleaned the carbs and re-jetted them and figured while i am this far might as well check the valves.

All valves were in spec except for #2 cylinder exhaust.

The inside valve lash of #2 cylinder measured at .13mm and the outside valve lash of #2 measured at .10mm. I popped the cams out and the inside shim looks to be stamped 78 while the outside shim looks to be stamped 75.
I measured the shims with a caliper and the 78 shim reads .177 mm and the outside shim reads .175

These look like stock shims. I thought the stock shims were "2" plus the number stamped; as 2.75 and 2.78

So my math shows i need a .52 to get #2 inside valve to .255
the #2 outside valve shows to be .02 shim to set lash at .255

using A + B - c = D

I have posted pics of the shims and the rotor which has no timing marks. Had to check TDC with a screw driver in the spark plug hole and watch the valves as they rotated through intake opening.

So, carried the shims to work this morning and asked our machinist to measure the shims. Both came out correct. 2.75 and 2.78 I have no idea why/how I measured what i measured.

Is anybody trading shims out any more?

Still wondering about the weird "lines" on the alternator rotor. Any of ya'll seen this before?

Measurement differences could be due to "zero" setting of your micrometer.

I changed our 2 shims on last valve-adjustment. Mix-n-matched them to get best fit possible. Remaining 2 couldn't be accommodated with what I had, so changed them out.
