Speedo Cable Compatibility

Hey all,

I have a 2003 ZZR 250. My speedo cable is shot, can see the break in it. So I figure finding a new one should be easy enough right? Wrong. I found a part number for it but can't find a compatible cable for sale or any other part number options that will fit. Help a rookie out please? If you know either where to find ZZR specific parts or what else is compatible, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Part number I've got is 54001-1145. I've found 54001-1xxx but not that exact number.

I see several on eBay from overseas sellers. One from Germany and a couple in the UK. Maybe check them out and see which one(s) have the best shipping options.

Also, there are repair kits available, but of course you'd have to get the details to find one that has the right parts for you. I replaced the inner cable of my Moto Guzzi tachometer cable by cutting the inner cable from my old Dodge van to the right length, and then forming the squares in the ends.

Is it that unique a cable that I've gotta go intercontinental? That seems crazy...

A dealer will have software that after entering a part number, the software show all the models it fits.

Yeah that's the one... shipping costs $1 more than the cable lol. Appreciate it, I'll see if they have any of the other parts I need.

This cable fits ex250h, bj250a2-3 and c2-3 estrella, kr250 b2 c2-3, all euro variants. Seems kinda insane that they're different from the rest of the same era bikes for something that would seem fairly universal for manufacturing purposes.

It does seem odd that something like that would be so unique. But if another common bike's part would've worked, you'd think they would've used the existing one rather than going through all the trouble of a whole new part number too.

If you're willing to experiment, you might be able to find another Kawasaki (or even other brand) part that's close enough to work. Maybe there's something that's a hair longer/shorter but still usable. As someone who likes to tinker and gets some pretty grand ideas, I can say that you might end up buying half a dozen other parts and still not find anything that works though.

Your best bet might just be to buy your replacement plus another spare, and hope you don't have to deal with it beyond those. At least it's not a wear item that you're replacing on a regular basis, like the chain and sprockets.

Am I completely overthinking this and the only differences are length? Looking at every option for Kawi on Amazon, the ends all look the same, spiral at one end, fork at the other, both with 11mm nuts. I can deal with a little extra length if it means saving half the money and a ton of waiting time....

If you buy one from Amazon, you can see if it fits. If it doesn't fit, you can easily return it.
