Need international shipping advice

As the title suggests, I'm trying to get three large packages from me to a colleague in Japan. UPS quoted me about $600 US for just the lightest, smallest of the three and DHL was about the same.

The issue seems to be their size. Two of them are over 5 feet long, the third about the size of one of the new-gen lower cowlings and weighs some 35-40lbs.

Suggestions? I'm quite willing to drive a ways if need be, but the only ideas I'm coming up with are shipping thru the airport with a friend who's heading to Japan, or trying a sea-freight service, with the nearest port being some 200 miles from me.

Thanks folks!

For those of you in the US....try Delta Air Cargo...they will ship just about anything, and you can pick it up in the airport of your choice.
