Gasoline in the Air Box??

Hey folks. Could anyone tell me why or how Gas can get into the air box?

I was testing this Muffler I made and decided to pull the snorkel beforehand.
I opened the air box and smelled gas. I pulled the filter out and noticed it was loaded with a fair amount of Gasoline. The air box itself had alittle bit of gas in it as well.

I did realize i had left the choke fully open from my previous ride so maybe that had something to do with it?? Gas backing up into the box maybe.

Was the choke the problem or is there something else that could be the culprit? thanks

even under normal conditions, gas vapors back up into the airbox. if you rode w/ the choke on, that would naturally make it worse.

you do know the foam filter is already oil impregnated, so maybe it was oil and gas mixed that you saw?

I say if the bike is running well, you don't have a problem.

Ah. No I didnt think of the stock filter being oiled. That would make sense to trap dust though huh .

I've only pulled the filter one other time on this bike to inspect it. Smelling it wasnt a thought.

Is the oil used for air filters a light oil of sorts?
I've never had to oil a filter before. I noticed the lawn mower filter i installed earlier this year was oiled. musta been "pre-oiled"

Geez. now that I think of it I better oil the other bikes filter as I noticed it was dry.
Also I should probably add cleaning and oiling the air filter to my winterizing checklist huh?

Thanks Kelly.

service manual says to use a 30w oil for the filter. I usually use a foam filter specific oil when oiling up foam filters.
