coil question

do the coils have to be earthed on the frame to work? (noticed their metal where its screws to the frame) going to try starting the spare engine I got ages ago today but wasn't sure about that one, suppose I could just turn it over and find out but im assuming they do. thought id ask anyway:P

No, they can work away from the frame.

See the schematic:

the bike shares a common ground. the engine is also grounded. so if your CDI is grounded (has to be to have power), then your coil charge will always have somewhere to go (so long as the plug is touching the engine-- or anything else grounded)

thanks, makes sense to me, i ended going for a trip to a mates and grabbing a spare frame to put it in anyway and bolted it in and got it all wired up accept i have no throttle control or killswitch/starter. ive started them before by wiring it all so its turned on the second it touches a battery and then just touch the starter wires together, gonna give it a go today.

was going to yesterday but for some reason the dash wasnt working when i turned it on (but the temp guage moved slightly).
there is alot more difference in wiring between a 89 and a 94 than i expected lol.
