Squeaky Front Axle and No Front Stand

My front axle has had a little bit of a squeak for quite a while now and I've finally decided that I'm going to pull off the front wheel to have a look (following cuong-nutz's wonderful post here) and give everything a good cleaning/lubing, but I don't have a front stand. Can I just put the bike on the rear stand and use a car jack with a bit of 2x4 to lift the bike at the oil pan or am I risking damage that way?

Unfortunately I also don't have any place with exposed rafters to lift the bike. I've got a ladder, but I'm not sure it's rated to hold the weight of the bike.

Sure it is. Check the rating on a similar ladder. Chances are it's 250 or 300 lbs. The bike weighs less than 400, and you're only lifting the front of it.
