I did my 1st oil change question!

alright another Oil post i know!!

but i followed the DIY for the oil change and I filled it upo in between the 2 lines, but i did it on the stand and if I try to level the bike by hand which is awefully hard it goes all the way up to the top level!

ok so if I sit on it and look while trying to have it level then it goes down again so i'm all confused any tip to figuring this out!?

try holding the bike from the right side. use your leg to hold it up so you can look at the glass.

Or have someone hold it up for you while you look

Duvi - without a rear stand to hold the bike I would suggest you use a piece of 2x4 under the side stand. It wont make it exactly level but it will be close enough and the weight will be on the 2x4 and stand.

Until you are really familiar with your bike I would not try to balance it by hand, on the right side, bent over looking at the oil level. If it starts to go on you . . . well let's say it wont be pretty.

What does the owners manual say on how to check the oil level? The owners manual for the "pre-gen" says to check it with the bike on the centerstand which the "new-gen does not have. So go by what the manual tells you to do.

Bike needs to be straight up and down for the oil sight glass to be accurate. Easiest way is to get a helper. You sit on bike, helper gives you a thumbs up that the oil is in between the two lines. Second easiest way is on front/rear stands if they hold the bike relatively level. Anything other than that will require you to find a way to be able to see the sight glass while the bike is sitting straight up and down.

I know what kkim did is to first confirm that the oil level was correct, then he put the bike on just his rear stand to see where the correct level in the sight glass would be when on a rear stand; now he can check the oil level when it's just on a rear stand.

It is normal for the oil level to be higher when it's level and not on it's sidestand. But always check the oil when the bike's level and on a level surface. As long as it's at the top line now and not above it you will be fine.

Are you sure? IIRC my 06 manual said on a level surface too (i.e. not on side or center stand)

If you dont have stands or a friend.
Get on the right side of the bike.
Place your left hand on the rear seat and apply the front break with your right hand.
Go down to one knee.
Pull the bike lightly towards you untill it feels weightless. (that is when it is balanced upright).
Look at the glass.
Let the bike roll softly back to its left side by straightening your elbows.
Let go of the bike once it is securly set on it's side stand.
Stand up.

Your done!

Manual says 1.7 quarts for oil and filter change. 1.4 for just oil.

isn't 1 quart = 1 litre? Mom checked her conversion chart cause we only have litres on our oil containers and she said a litre was equal to a quart.

It's close, but different enough to matter:

1 US quart = 0.946352946 liters

(thanks, google conversions!)

Well close enough for me. I asked her to have an idea on how much oil i was gonna need. Another day or two riding and i'll be ready for my next oil change, going synthetic.

You'll love the synthetic. I was shocked at how different the bike felt after changing.

Duvi, you can just loosen the drain bolt to let some come back out, or you could use a long pipette like a turkey baster to take some back out of the top
