Exhaust gains question for those with knowledge

So with my bike stored for the winter I'm reduced to thinking about farkles. I was on the AreaP site the other day just poking around, and I noticed something about how much gain you get from an aftermarket pipe.

Seems that, no matter what the bike, you only get a few horsepower. Makes no difference if it's a Ninjette or a Hayabusa.

What's interesting to me is that the absolute gain (number of horsepower increase) seems to be fairly consistent no matter what the base power of the bike may be.

So the relative gain for our bikes is much greater than it is for an ubersport.

Am I wrong?

I'm interested in an AreaP for this reason...the bang for the buck is significant if the dyno charts are accurate. It'd be much more difficult to justify an aftermarket exhaust on a bigger bike.

PS: For some reason, the newgen exhaust has disappeared from the AreaP site as of 10/31/09...anybody know what's up with that?

My feeling is 10%is a lot for any bolt on. But with proper jetting and gearing the bike can be made more than 10 % more enjoyable to ride. Stock it felt like it revved two quick in the lower gears . So I changed the gearing . Then Yoshi came out with an exhaust so I bought one and re jetted. Together it not only adds up to more HP at the top RPM but with the pipe the mid range comes alive . The way the bike zips from 6000 to 10000 rpm is the best part about the open exhaust . 3 hp on to is good but I bet it is more like 5 hp in the midrande average. add some timing and this bike rocks. I do hate the noise . just for the record.

Does area-p make a Full system for anything other than the 250r? Thought all I had noticed were slip-on's.

Sometimes its not the peak power that increases but a boost in midrange, which typically translates to better rideability. All depends on design. The other things is an aftermarket exhaust usually weighs less. I believe the AreaP reduces weight by about 5 pounds. On a larger bike, it often reduces 10 or more pounds as many liter + bikes have extremely large mufflers (ZX14, Harley XR1200).

Just read today that the city of Boston had passed an ordinance that any bike without OEM muffler (or an EPA approved muffler) could be subject to a $300 fine. It can even be assessed by a meter maid. Not sure if it applies to older bikes as some might be impossible to obtain an OEM muffler or an EPA approved muffler.

OEM muffler systems have an EPA stamp on them that's usually not that hard to find. Most (pretty much all) aftermarket systems don't.

The EPA stuff is stamped into the can of the OE exhaust. I've yet to see an after market motorcycle exhaust that is legal for on-road use in the USA.

Some in boston are calling it a stamp tax and had a rally to revolt. Not to vary much from the OP just wanted to bring it up and make sure it won't be a problem in your area.

Minor Consideration

EPA allows for the modification of the carbs for operation above 4000 ft; however, this is not the case with the exhaust system. Looks like the airbox is also regulated.

The stamp on my Buell is all the way on the bottom, no way to see it without lifting the bike or removing the muffler.

but if it ever became a point of contention, it is there for you to prove your bike has not been modified.
