K&M Oil filter issues?

I'm super excited for my first track day in 2 weeks. Just got word K&N oil filters are banned effective immediately.

Any thoughts on other brands?

pretty much OEM only are allowed at most racing and track-day organizations.

Why are they banned? I recently purchased one from Amazon and was going to change oil this weekend. Should I get another filter?

K&N are banned due to a bad production run that caused leaks around the tack welds that hold the nut on. Riders would also use that nut to tighten the filter down and cause leaks in the same area as well. It was easier and safer to just ban them for track days. Its not just K&N as a brand either, its ANY filter with a nut on the end. Hiflo's and the likes.

When 3 filters fail in the same day, something is terribly wrong. Don't be "that guy" who dumps oil on the track.

So, basically your free to use the filter of your choice that does NOT have a nut on the end. If you have one already... should you get another brand? Hmmmm, your call, but you gunna bet your bike and skin on a $4 filter?

OEM is the way to go, but the Ninjette isn't the typical filter as it goes inside as opposed to being outside. Could you get away with running K/N? yes, is it recommended? no.

Near end of season last year, guy blew K&N filter going into turn-14 @ Thunderhill East. This is 105 mph straight with maximum-braking down to 25mph for T14. This causes 5-bike pile-up. Did over $10k damages to an Aprilia RSV4. One guy broke both wrists. Of course guy that sprayed oil on track? He got away with not even a scratch!

Bizarre to me that they aren’t universally banned. When I’m with group that doesn’t ban them, I walk around pits looking at every bike for K&N filters so I can make note to stay clear of them on track.

I'm surprised K&N never went into PR damage control mode when they got banned at the track. They just don't care enough.

Aside from the end nut issue, they also had problems sealing due to bad o-rings and/or poor base forming.

IIRC the 300 and 400 have spin-on filters....

Dunno if it's the same back east, but OMRRA/WMRRA seem to have backed off a bit - rulebooks specify the recalled K&Ns. I've passed tech with nut-free HiFlo and Wix filters. Track day providers don't have it specified, and I don't see them sending a newbie home for it. It'd probably be looked at *real* close, though.

Kind of a bummer, those nuts *are* handy for getting the things off. I've yet to find a filter wrench that really works well.

Part of me is tempted to get one of those reusable steel mesh/magnetic ones.

I've tried most of 'em.

This

This

And of course this

But the one that never fails is this. Ten bucks at Harbor Freight. For really stubborn filters that make all the other wrenches slip, just crank down on it. Yeah you'll mangle the filter can, but who cares... it's coming off.

Yeah, that HF one really works. Replaced my hammer-and-screwdriver tool!

There should be nothing inherently wrong with having a "nut" on the end of the filter. One problem with the nut is that there will be the those who think that it's there for putting the filter on when it's really for taking the filter off. So then they feel the need to torque it like a lug nut on a semi and they literally tear the metal at the spot welds.

BTW, this is nothing new. Years ago a similar thing happened with Fram oil filters being banned by some race orgs because of a manufacturing defect.

Also, don't think that OEM is always best. There's nothing saying that these "aftermarket" companies aren't making them for OEMs. Making multiple brands with the same equipment is very common.

I picked up an OEM and will do an oil change this weekend.
They specifically stated K&M and that no others were prohibited.
I can understand the nut causing issues due to people cranking them down.

It's not required at novice level but I went ahead and got predrilled safety nuts where appropriate and will do all that while fairings are off.

BTW, It's K&N

I would probably ban K&M too

I was about 4 bikes behind this rider.

Link to original page on YouTube.

Video taken from OILFILTERFAILURE.COM

Rider dropped a stream of oil halfway down the back straight and on the race line for another 3000ft. It took track services nearly 3h to clean up.
