Smile Work in progress

So I got my Ninja second hand in not perfect condition but that didn't matter because I have big plans for it. Then, on Thursday I dropped it So that made up my mind to start working on it now and get it up to my standards. By dropping it, fortunately I was stationary, so the fender isn't broken only scratched and my brake lever bent so I'm on a mission to find new ones.

The bike before I begin:

There was a dent on the gas tank that I've filled and waiting for it to dry so I can sand it and get it ready for painting: (this was existing when I got it)

I want to at some point get a new better exhaust but money isn't playing a long so I decided to use high heat grade paint to paint it: (again, the dent wasn't me) I think it looks much better than it did!

I took these off the bike and I am paint them red!

I am kind of over these Monster stickers so I am removing them. I had to use goo off, then I gave them a wash and now they're ready to be painted:

Now I'm waiting for the paint to arrive and then I'll start the painting process on all the parts. I am also going to remove all the stickers from the bike including the green tire plastic things and replace them with better looking ones. I then want a new dark windshield and I am looking into importing a new display unit.

I don't know flickr well enough to see why I'm not seeing your pics, but it looks like the link is to the picture page vs the picture itself.

But I did see your album, so cool. The red rearsets are going to look interesting. Are you keeping the green rim tape or removing that as well (can you remove that, never really looked)?

I realized it wasn't working so I've added them to the Google+ site and now the photos seem to be loading I'm going to stick with black and then add the red in place of the green, for the wheels I'm trying to decide between leaving them black or taping them red. I hope it's going to turn out the way I want but if it doesn't then it'll just turn into a longer project until it's all done properly

Maybe?

Looking sharp and can't wait to see the transformation unfold.

I tried adding green rim tape to mine in hopes of creating a neat effect. Pro Grip brand includes a funny little applicator to help get the straight tape onto the curved rim. Mine failed due to user error, the tape itself was fine and looked good until the stuff I had on under it came off and took the rim tape with it.

A few folks on here have gone solid color bikes with powder coated wheels. Seen one orange and another blue. Red would look epic if you've got the cash to burn.

And after a really long night here is my progress:

Firstly, I bought a spray painting cover for myself and I think I could join Walter White and make some meth #joking. It really is worth the money to get on of these if you're taking on a project with a lot of paint flying all over the place

New brake lever (from kawa this was $12) :

Patched up gas tank before:

After:

Wind shield before:

After:

Whole bike before:

And after:

I know the photo quality isn't great so here is a photo of the fairings before and after:

I think it look 20x better in real life and much better than it did before I took on the project. So next for me is:
Adding a tank sticker guard
Adding sleek Kawa stickers to the body
Change the tape around the wheels from green to red
The front mud guard I want to do a carbon fiber effect using the plastic dip
When I get the money for it I want to add one of those Koso units but it's a little pricey for me right now

Each panel was a different amount but about 3-5 for each one. I bought 3 cans of black, one can of red, one of a gloss (which I haven't used yet because I'm loving the mat) a can of grey and a can of black high temp spray for the exhaust. I am doing a few things this afternoon so will post later tonight

Tank protector:

Pretty awesome:

This will have to make due until I get one of those awesome Koso units:

It's a cellphone/GPS holder so I can use the GPS and since I use Waze I can see what speed I'm doing so it's okay that I blocked the Spedo section. I used valcro to attach it and to use with my remotes so that they don't scratch my new paint (and it's now easier to open the gates at home). As you can see I decided to use black paint around that area instead of the red because I think it looks more awesome. I also used black plastidip to darken my wind shield as well.

I've got the red wheel tape so that's next

I've read elsewhere on here that the gloss doesn't come out all that great. Course it was on a white dipped bike and the gloss came out yellow.

I dipped half of my lower cowlings and I agree, the matte looks sick.

I presume you've already found this site, but for anyone else: DipYourCar.com

Exactly! Everywhere I've gone to ask about having the bike painted and etc all wanted to charge about R10,000 (about $1,000). This whole project thusfar has cost about $300. I am very keen on some LEDs behind the farings and that Koso unit which will bring that price up a bit. I found an online store that will import the Koso unit into SA for me but it's going to be R6,200 ($620) So firstly, I am looking at cheaper ways of importing it, and secondly waiting for some extra cash flow.

And most importantly out of this whole project, I have enjoyed doing it

So I had a fun evening.. not! I noticed a burning smell and realized that I had a leak somewhere on the bike that was pissing out coolant. I think I found and fixed the problem but we'll have to see... after 3 hours of searching. :/

Onto lighter fun things, I didn't get around to the red tape for the rims yet, that is hopefully in the next few days but I have ordered one of these: http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/14460...Low_Price.html I've seen a few of these around forums and Youtube so I decided to give it a go. I'm hoping it'll be straightforward because it's a 12v but I will probably get some help for the wiring. It's a really good price at $60 or so. I've seen some of these reverse camera sets for a bucket load of cash (about $199) so for $60 it's worth a shot I say

You will definitely need to do up a lot of pics or a video of that install and the results. I've wondered what that'd be like with the monitor tucked under the windscreen.

Sam, you should try bending your handle bars straight with a long pipe over them. the odd angle could fatigue your wrists.

I'll try Strength is not one of my super powers unfortunately.

I have seen the helmets but I've already ordered the unit so I'll see how that goes. If it doesn't work out how I'd like I'll go ahead and try other ideas. I really do like the idea of being able to see what's happening behind me...

I will make a plan to do photo's and/or video

I did a lot of work this weekend!

Firstly here is the rear view camera and a link to how I installed it:
https://www.ninjette.org/forums/show...586#post851586

Here are the LEDs:

Here is a charging station thing:

Now just for that damn green rim tape

By the way, I am going to have to buy another bottle of black plastic paint because I was rough on my bike while doing all this so I have a few patch ups to do. If I had known this I would have left the painting till last.

Wow looks pretty good. How well does the Plasti Dip finish hold up? What kind of prepwork to the plastics was involved?

Basically you don't need to do any prep work other than make sure it's clean. I took some goo off to clean off all the residue and then I gave it a good wash with a car cleaning shampoo that doesn't have a wax in it (I like Meguiars personally) Then once it's properly dry you just start spraying. You have to layer it properly and make sure each layer dries before applying the next layer to make sure it's done properly. (each layer takes 10-15 minutes to dry)

Wear and tear is actually pretty good. If I had done the painting last I would see no issues with it scratching or coming off even when using a power washer. However, I did this step first and then had to strip off all the covers like 3 or 4 times with having to find the coolant leak, installing all the additional mods etc so my tools did slip and scratch it. I'm ordering more plastidip and then I can just touch that up. That's another good thing that you can just touch up instead of having to do it all over again

It really does! I hated the green monster stickers all over the place, I feel it cheapened the bike.
