86 250 flooding engine
I had jut bought my ninja at the end of last summer from my old boss. It had been sitting for a while and the battery was dead and wouldn't take a charge. I bought a new battery and charges it before installing. It started up but was only running on one cylinder. I pulled off the carburetors and cleaned them up really good. Ran fine after I did this. It would flood out easily but as long as I didn't choke it after it fired it seemed to run fine. I was riding one day and it flooded out and would not start again. I got it back to my garage and purchased a full carb kit from Kawi with new needle and seat and gaskets and all. Installed it. Contined to flood. Previous owner had installed a single stock exhaust off of a newer 250 (he thought early 2000's but wasn't sure). I'm wondering if anyone has any idea if this could be a jetting issue or if anyone had any other ideas? I have big plans for cosmetic mods for this bike but I would like to get it running in tip top shape before I even think about anything else.

Sounds like everything in the fuel system is new or has tested good. So maybe an intermittent electrical fault is preventing the spark and allowing fuel to collect? Battery sounds good. Have you checked for spark plug wire resistance and bad ignitor?

No I have not. I have good spark but didn't test the wire resistance. That should be around zero ohms correct? Also how do I test the igniter?

Those engines didn't change much from the late eighties to the 2000's did they? Can I rule out a jetting issue because of the exhaust? The only thing I could think if is stock it had dual pipes and now it's two into one.. Would that make a difference on jetting size? I tried talking to the Kawi dealer, they wouldn't tell me anything other than to bring it in. I'm not paying $100 an hour for them to look at it. Bike isn't worth that..

I don't think bad jetting or the exhaust would cause a sudden failure. I would expect it to run poorly consistently. There are a few test methods in the manual, but the best method is to try a known good unit. As I understand it, the bike stayed relatively the same from 87-07. Check fuses? The manual is in the garage at the moment but I think an internet search might get you a pdf version with the resistance spec.

Checked all the fuses I could find on the bike. And checked with a meter not just looking at them ( just to be sure ) I will do some searching around on the web and see what I can come up with, thanks for your suggestions!
