Maverick Viñales Handed 3-place Grid Penalty, Bagnaia Promoted To Pole For Valencia MotoGP Race Maverick Viñales has been handed a 3-place grid penalty for the final race of the 2023 MotoGP season. The factory Aprilia rider was shown the black and orange 'meatball' flag during warm up, after the engine of his Aprilia RS-GP suddenly started spewing white smoke from the exhaust. Instead of pulling over immediately, Viñales cruised around the track and returned to the pits.

As Viñales was on pole, the 3-place penalty has an interesting effect on the starting grid for Sunday's MotoGP race. Pecco Bagnaia is promoted to pole, with Johann Zarco second and Jack Miller moving up from the second row to the last spot on the first row. Viñales will start the race from fourth.
