Being adventurous is one thing but dropping the bike your first day will make your day very crappy. @antiant, if you have not done the course yet then I wouldn't recommend buying. I've seen people spend the money only to realize motorcycles are not for them. Dropping a new bike on first day or buying it and then realizing that you don't like motorcycling is a pretty expensive trial and error in my opinion.

What I am surprised about is the putting the cart before the horse modus operandi that is being employed by most. Imagine my embarassment as I got the keys to my 300 and I hopped on and drove off the lot. There were several people who came over to compliment the looks of the white 300 while I was putting my gear on. I now know they were mocking me because I was not strapping it down in a trailer or pickup to drive home. Looking back I also wished that my 300 would have been dry docked in my garage instead while I showed it off to friends, but was not able to legally ride it. I went through the MSF training, did my due diligence and got the bike as the last step. I'm not making that mistake again. I couldn't be more miserable right now.

Salex tax=7% ($335.93)
Uncrating/setup = $0
Delivery charge = $0
Undercoating- They tried to sell me extended warranty, tire protection, service plans, battery coverage, and $800 gap coverage. I turned everything down. I have not yet plated my 300, so I am unsure what the cost will be to plate/register. I will be doing this next week.

To me, OTD should be your negotiated price for the bike + setup and delivery. Since sales tax, registration/plates vary as well as service plans and extended warranties added to the deal will make apples to oranges comparisons.

The reason why people compare OTD price is because some dealerships can lower the price of the bike but then compensate by charging extra on the "paperwork fees" to compensate. You may seem like you are getting a deal but in the end, they got you instead. If the difference in OTD price is only by a couple of hundred then people just figure it is due to the sales tax.

Correct. Doc fees etc. should also be included since they get wrapped in the sale price/loan. So add $20 doc fee to the $4799 price for me. I don't think taxes, title, plates etc. should be included as those vary state to state.

In India it's 6200 before taxes and taxes differ as per city and state. For example I have to pay 13% as registration and another 4% for my city tax. So for me it was 7100 otd including insurance.

$6200 USD? That is pretty steep. Why is the markup so high in India? Is is the demand, and the ability to ride year round? My insurance was about $300 for the year full coverage.

When I register and plate my 300 the fees will be:
$10 vehicle fee
$35 base vehicle fee on MSRP
$28 wheel tax
$336 sales tax

$5420 OTD= 300 SE with ABS + Icon Alliance Chieftan helmet + Icon Pink Airmada helmet

Last futzed with by snowbandit; June 4th, 2013 at 03:53 PM. Reason: The helmet they were going to give me is back ordered thru Aug, so we agreed on a cheaper lid and they gave me $180 back

Taxes bro. Since its imported in india as a kit and assembled locally, it attracts customs duties of over 30% and add to that the taxes etc and it can get pretty steep. India is a pretty expensive place to buy cars and bikes. At least ones which are imported. Also it's 6200 for non abs. Abs isn't offered here as an option.

$5200 is a great deal as well.

The only reason I was able to get such a good deal is due to the purchasing programs out here in Germany for US spec bikes, and that I don't have to pay any taxes.
