2007 250R Starting Trouble
Hi! First post, please no roast.
Bike is a 2007 Ninja 250R with 4000 miles on the odometer. This is also my first bike. I got the bike home yesterday and it was struggling to start, I had the choke full on and had to give it gas to get it to roughly idle below 1k RPM. I think the idle adjustment screw was out of adjustment so I turned it all the way tight and then backed it off 2.5 turns because I read online that this is where the factory idle setting roughly is. I did get it to start at some point and it revved up to around 10k and with some adjustment I got it to idle at 3k but I couldn't get it to drop below that without dying. It was low on gas so I added a gallon (couldn't find a bigger gas tank because, unfortunate timing, I'm in NC where the hurricane is supposed to hit). Any thoughts? Should I take out the carb? I've never serviced a carb but I have some tools and have experience working on cars. Thanks |

Sounds like your carbs just need a good cleaning. The best advice I can give you is to do the airbox mod to make removing and installing the carbs a breeze.

I'll give it a shot. I'm hesitant to do the air box mod because I don't like sawing into stuff but I'll clean the carbs for sure. Hopefully it survives the Armageddon. |

First thing I would do is completely drain the gas from the tank and floatbowls. Use fresh 87 octane, ethanol-free if it's available.
I'd also check all of the clamps around the carb, because you could have a vacuum leak. Spraying carb cleaner on the boots (when it's running) will tell you if there is a leak. Have the caps been removed from the idle mixture screws on the bottom of the carbs? Those are the screws that should be set to 2.5 turns out as a starting point. If all that checks out, it may be time to pull the carbs. I wouldn't say doing it properly is easy, as it takes more than a can of carb cleaner and compressed air to really get them clean. If you get to that point, and don't want to do it yourself we will put you in-touch with ducatiman. How does the air filter look? No need to chop airbox, here's how to extract carbs easily in less than 5-min:
1. Remove seat, side-covers, tank, battery 2. Remove screws at bottom of battery box 3. Remove choke & throttle cables 4. Spray WD-40 on carb-boots and warm them with hair-dryer for 1-min 5. Loosen ONLY clamps between boots and carbs, slide clamps towards middle of boots 6. Grab carbs and slide them backwards out of boots 7. Loosen LEFT carb boot clamp to head, slide clamp toward middle of boots 8. Carefully pry LEFT carb boot off head with rear sliding back onto carb 9. Pull front of LEFT boot sideways to remove 10. Loosen clamps/spring-rolls between carbs & airbox 11. Push carbs forward off airbox 12. Remove carbs sideways from left side. The trick is to leave them attached to airbox to make as much clearance in front as possible to remove left boot completely. And leave right boot firmly attached to head to give enough clearance to remove carbs sideways |
