Help! I'm breaking out! :(

I have super sensitive skin, and everytime I ride, I've noticed my skin would break out. I'd get a pimple or two once in awhile, but since I started riding, it just got bad. I know its the helmet, because I would get it on my chin, and jawline. I dont think it's possible for me to wash the liners after every ride, thats just too much work. But aside from washing my face after, is there any other way I could prevent breakouts? I'm thinking of a disposable tape or somethin that you can put on the cheekpads. So you can replace it everytime you ride, so you dont get the oils and dirt buildup in the liner? ... Is there such a thing? Do any of you guys have this problem?

Maybe pick up a bunch of head socks that you can alternate between, as an alternative to washing the helmet liner every ride. Some ideas.

Perhaps a spare helmet and a set of extra cheek-pads for each could help? Maybe a better ventilated helmet to reduce sweating?

When I rode across the US, my entire face was chapped and peeling for weeks!

Id have to agree with this post. I had a super thin clava (don't where it is now). It maybe worth buying 2 of them so one is clean while the other is in use.

balaclava, they come in cotton silk and other materials, find one you like by a 5 pack and throw them in with your normal laundry.

They also help keep your neck protected from the wind.

P.s. also handy if you want to rob a bank

Not sure how handy it would be. I guess while they beat you to death with their instruments they won't know what you look like.

Pia,

If you ride in mostly warm weather, you might consider an open face helmet with face shield. Normally, I recommend full helmets, but if nothing else works to relieve you....

I always, ALWAYS wear a head covering under my helmet.

Look, the skin on your head and face puts out all sorts of oily crud.

Way more than, say, your torso.

How many times are you willing to wear a T-shirt before you finally decide it's just too gross and have to wash it?

Yet people wear their helmets for years...

Ick.

Go for the lightweight balaclava. It won't be any hotter than the helmet is and you know you'll have clean fabric next to your skin.

I was going to say that I think of it more like a shoe but then I remembered... socks. So I thought about it for another second and was going to bring up leather jackets and then I remembered the underclothes. Finally, I settled on a ball cap. Yeah, most people sweat like crazy in them and throw them away when they get too dirty/smelly to stand anymore. They also go on your head.

Assuming it is new or you have kept it clean...what brand of helmet do you have? I got a new arai this year and for the first 5-6 rides my head and face itched. I tried a layer cap and everything finally I had to use cortozone liquid Alcohol based before riding. now it doesn't bother me, it is broke in. I am thinking I was allergic to the interior lining chemical that wafts off when new. Because the cap liner did not help I am thinking chemical.

Never had this before so that is all I can think of. Maybe you are reacting to the liner.

Are you certain it is acne and not an allergic reaction to the materials in the helmet?

hmm. have you tried to see if wearing a liner helps?
I always wear one and it also helps wick away sweat like this:

give it a try, as maybe it'll help since your face wont have direct contact with the helmets pads and it helps wick away sweat rather than leave it soaked in the helmet pads

thanks so much guys for your responses! I appreciate it... Hmmm I'm not sure I'd want to wear a face mask or a head sock... but i will give it a try, especially since its cooler now. But I just purchased a new helmet, its Scorpion exo-400y, and was using a gmax helmet before. I think my skin might have been irritated to gmax.. thinking about it now. its just a crappy helmet overall... I am definitely more satisfied with scorpion..I've only used the new helmet twice, so we will see.! Thanks also for recommending to put something like cortizone before riding, I think that's really a good idea. And will try that as well.

the pads in the gmax helmet may have not been antimicrobial/antibacterial like some of your better helmet brands. My KBC helmet has some nice removable liners which Im sure the scorpion has.
