70 mph

I have almost 250 miles on my 09 250r and I took it up to 70mph slowly this morning. I have broken the bike in and shift at around 4-5k rpms. Do you think revving it like that is bad? It was slow and gradual up to 70mph because I did not twist the throttle that much. The bike foot peg vibrated a bit... Do they do this?

Am I going to ruin the engine if I do little slow blasts like that? I probably wont do another slow pull like that for a bit. I was in 6th gear when I started the slow pull.

I am also going to go to a party in a couple of weeks and imagine I will have in the 300 or maybe low 400 miles on the bike at the time. Do you think I can take a short highway trip like 20 miles tops? Or am I better off driving. I really want to be able to go on the highway because of the fuel savings.

Let me know what you guys think about my actions.

just ride the bike as it's needed to get where you need to go. don't worry about hurting the bike... it will be fine.

Depends what kind of party. Typically if your the kind of person that can have fun, but limit your drinking, take your car. If your the kind of person that can have fun WITHOUT drinking, then take the bike. Alcohol use is a serious concern when bringing a bike to a social occasion.

Aside from that, if you dont mind how the seat feels after 20 miles, and you have gear to prevent road rash at 70mph, then go for it.

I am going to ride up there and then take his Explorer to a camp ground where the party will be at. So I will be sleeping there so drinking will be okay to do.

I won't mix alcohol and riding for any reason.

To be honest I believe motoman's method of break in. His method is to run it hard in the first hundred miles (like on a dyno especially) and change the oil at like 100miles. I honestly think he's right in that the manufacturer's method is wrong and does more harm then good.

Just ride the bike like you would normally drive it, change the RPM's often, run the length of the RPM range, give the engine a workout, and change the oil often in the beginning. Do all that and you will be fine. These engines, both the old and the new, are practically bulletproof, you have to mess up big time to do them any harm. Just running it normally will not hurt it.

I took it easy for all of two days (first 100 miles), then I let her rip through the freeways like I stole it.

My baby didn't give me any trouble, and she runs like a champ.

I am glad to hear you will be staying at the campground. Drinking and Riding (OR driving) is Not acceptable in my mind..at all. (Sorry that was mainly meant for Bill).

As for the 20 miles of freeway... It is up to you. We can tell you go for it! We can tell you no your not ready... But that is us. That is not you. Motto to live by: Ride YOUR own ride. Everyone is different and accepts things differently depending on them. Look at DarkNinja, just outta MSF he road his bike home from the dealership on a freeway, no problems. Others have someone trailer/truck/drive their bike home for practice before going out. It all depends on you. It's your ride. Ride it within your confidence/comfort. No one is behind the bars but you.

If you do feel confident I would say perhaps try a little stretch of freeway/highway to see if you do feel comfortable. This way if it isn't you still have time to change your plans to either carpool or drive your car. That make sense?

Take it on the highway...the bike will be just dandy

I would suggest doing a little more highway riding at those speeds before you go the 20 miles especially if its your first time...that first cross wind created by an 18wheeler could be a little frightening and you wanna be used to it. 20 miles aint that long but you wanna be comfortable so take it up to 70 a couple more times to get used to it then enjoy

Sunny, I don't condone driving under the influence at all. I do condone drinking at a party and limiting yourself, so when it's time to leave, the alcohol is out of your system. A few beers with your burger at the bbq at 3pm is not going to affect your driving skills when you leave later at 9:30. For someone my weight and height, the alcohol will be out my system completely, but I would certainly feel more tired than if I hadnt drank, hence the car vs bike thing. You can drive a car a little tired, but definately not a bike. Who isn't tired on their morning commute to work? Like i said, "limit" is the keyword, i'm sorry if my statement implied otherwise.
