Ultrasonic cleaner, I take it? That's what we use in the lab here for stuff that's tough to clean internally. I recently threw my carb bodies in ours during the "refreshing" of my recently purchased '02, and they're working great.

Edit: Apparently so Says it right there in the OP.

yes, Mr Kestrel....ultrasonic, sodablast, compressed air, dipping, right on down to old fashioned handiwork...methods applied as needed within various phases....of course different methods apply to different parts...

hey, whatever it takes to produce a functional, presentable, clean, long-term reliable carb set.

My carbs needed work like last year, now I'm trying to limp through to January so I have spare time to work on them.

If I wasn't bike only I'd totally send them in for a refurb. But I need to get to work somehow in the meantime. These look so nice and clean, I'm gonna be jealous after my inevitable hack job. xP But hey, you gotta start learning somewhere.

I do turn them around quickly, all parts in stock (no delays on my end) and use USPS Priority (a very affordable 2nd day service)

First time carb cleans are frequently exercises in frustration (redo's). You can't possibly do with a spray can what I do with equipment. As this is your work transport, i'm sure you'd prefer to eliminate the redo scenario.

We're quickly coming on Jan...you say you'll have time then. I stand "at your service" ...simply shoot me a PM for pricing/shipping info.

daks-

i just realized i have a refurbed set for sale, see link...my classified here on the forum

https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=240826

This offers another reasonable, practical alternative....buy them outright, bolt on and ride, NO downtime.
AND you'll be able to keep yours for spares and educational purposes (you can clean them and learn at your leisure)

PM me to go forward.

^ ty for positive remark SON1C.

I'm a member here and of course a fellow enthusiast, I worked at a dealership in the 70's as a youngster....we HAD to learn carbs (FI on bikes didn't exist at the time)

My brother owns an EX500, some years ago I serviced carbs for a few young members (nice kids) over there basically as a favor. Met such success, I've invested, branched out and grown it a bit since. I don't openly advertise, the service is meant exclusively for 250 and 500 members and locals.
(I much prefer dealing with fellow member/enthusiasts on our forums as opposed to strangers on ebay)

And...answered your PM. Gotta go..time to sweep the floor (yup, I do that , too!)

Update !!

Gordon refurbed my 04 250 Carbs last summer and I am still amazed how easy it starts and runs and idles. One point to add is that I had a new tank installed and put on new fuel lines and a filter before ever putting gas in the carbs. His work is awesome and very affordable, I don't wanna say cheap but when you consider the aggravation and frustration of removing and installing if not right it is.

I purchased Gordon's refurbished carbs with the FP kit (https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=257594) a little over a week ago. They arrived quickly and looked amazing. I bought these because I had botched the job of cleaning my own after letting old gas gel for about a year, even losing a critical part in the process.

He went above and beyond trying to find a replacement, but in the end it was a smarter move to get his complete set (plus the FP needles alone were worth the price difference.) After swapping in my own mains (airbox delete/exhaust) the bike runs better now than it ever has. Great guy, very helpful!

Thumbs up Ducatiman Thumbs Up

Just wanted to bump this thread to give a huge thumbs up to Ducatiman. I recently decided to be a good friend and offer to get a friends bike running, despite me being unfamiliar with this particular bike. I attempted to clean the carbs and swore a lot as I am sure you all have. I then stumbled upon this thread and decided to shoot him a PM. He replied very quickly and was extremely professional with the way he conducts his business. I was merely looking for a cleaning service when he let me know he had a set that he was going to refurb soon if I was interested. I contemplated and thought it might be easier that way so I responded. Not even 6 hours later he sends me pictures of beautifully rebuilt carbs and the next morning I have a USPS label telling me they are on their way to me. Put them in the bike and she fired right up! I am honestly blown away by the dedication of this man and you are all lucky to have him should anyone need carb work. Ducatiman, thanks for the awesome experience and I will be sending any carb work I need done your way as well as anyone I come across who many need work done.

Sent my carbs off today to get cleaned! Picked up someone else's failed project to piece together...got it almost buttoned up but the carbs were horrendous! Can't wait to get them cleaned and on the bike! So far his responses have been great and know it'll continue to be!

For a certain 250 owner...this pic is to document special needle spacers for use with jet kit needles. The spacers fill the lost gap of the stock needle "heads" and prevent needle up/down float (especially during slide falling/decel conditions)

Not using them otherwise allows the needles to "dance" somewhat within the retainers....essentially...unable to be properly retained....and could jeopardize the stability of the C-clip in the long term....wear would eventually occur.

From my stock, I've used these now on 500 and 250 applications where the owner chose to use jet kit needles.....I highly recommend their use.

Just got my carbs back from Gordon and I have to say his work and customer service was top notch! I built the bike from the frame up and decided to send the carbs off to get cleaned and rejetted before I installed them and wasted my time with carb issues. The bike runs great and could not possibly think of anyone else I'd rather send them to in the future! If you are in doubt about it, for the money you can't beat his service! Thanks again for everything!

Did a refurb for a member today..bike outdoors, uncovered for 1 1/2 years...
note "before" corrosion...great improvement "after".

Jets, innards were cleaned per my usual, all new consumables, of course. All circuits confirmed clear.

Wet tested, these will be fine runners, greatly improved, "saved" is even a fair summation.

Same day service, btw. Received at noon...done by 5;30PM...shipping back tomorrow.

Owners comments are welcome.

Not bad at all! Gordon's turnaround time is worth paying for if you want to get a frame and a bunch of parts together quickly.

More pictures of what the above assembly used to look like for those who are interested:

Completed these for a west coast member today, came out nice both in & out

curiously...the U and W needles were installed R to L...in the wrong carbs.
Caught and corrected the error.
Drilled the pilot caps...set screws to 3 turns from seated.
Provided some new vacuum hoses ( 2 *between* the carbs and the tiny decel hose) complimentary, from my stock
Found evidence of ethanol induced moisture ...a gel.

Otherwise a routine comprehensive service.

Pics of brass, split carbs and final assembly. Stainless hardware....nice, eh?

I had my carbs off the other day. I removed the EPA caps and installed new main jets. I haven't touched the pilot screws yet but I looked into the venturis on the engine side of the carbs and I could see that the tip of one jet needle protruded into the carb throat about 2 - 3mm more than the other. They left the factory that way? Anyway, maybe you could accidentally damage the protruding pilot screw tip?

Bill

P.S.; I wonder how well my engine will run when both screws are turned-out 2 1/2 turns each?

Not using them otherwise allows the needles to "dance" somewhat within the retainers....essentially...unable to be properly retained....and could jeopardize the stability of the C-clip in the long term....wear would eventually occur.

From my stock, I've used these now on 500 and 250 applications where the owner chose to use jet kit needles.....I highly recommend their use.
Where do you get them? It's apparent you recommend the spacers whether or not you play with the jet needle height.

By the way, I highly recommend Loctite Super Glue "Professional" over Krazy glue Zap-A-Gap etc. Available at Lowes, Home Depot etc.

a pretty obscure area to enable "accidental damage"....not like its Grand Central Parkway..what the hell would even bring you in there?

2 1/2 turn is just a starting point, adequate to start/run, pilot screws should further be fine tuned , bike hot...each side for highest idle speed, best throttle response...aka the sweet spot. An EGA (exhaust gas analyzer) would offer optimum results...but simply not practical nor realistic for vast majority of owners. A well tuned (valves adjusted!) 250, once warmed.. should offer re start at touch of the button, effortless rev, drop back (no hang) from RPM to a steady consistent idle....meanwhile deliver great MPG.

Good questions and comments. Thanks for your interest, Bill.
