Starter Relay/Starter Problem

I have a 2007 Ninja 250 that I have been riding regularly this past month and today it wouldn't start. It just makes a clicking sound when I try to start.

-Tested the battery and it shows 12V.
-Able to bump start the bike.
-Screwdriver across solenoid did not start the bike.
-Jumping the relay does not turn the starter motor, and the voltages to the relay are normal.
-All fuses intact.

I'm hoping the starter doesn't need to be replaced but it looks like that might be the issue. Any advice? Thanks.

Battery is dead. Even though it may read 12V, it has no cranking amps left. Probably a dead cell in it. You can take it to a auto parts store to have them test it to verify but I'm fairly confident you need a battery.

the battery should read close to 13.0volts without a load.

Hey guys, I am a friend of Time Mage.

I am going to work with him tonight to test out if the battery is the issue. I happen to have a new battery sitting at home that I am going to slap in this Ninja to see if it will start. We will let you know how it goes!

Thanks for the advice so far!

That would depend on how he has his meter set but yes I would agree. ~12.6-12.9 is pretty typical.

It was actually reading around 12.5 with the motor not running, and about 14 idling. One thing I did notice, was when revving, it actually went down to about 12-13v and just stayed there. Not sure if this is normal for this bike or not, but could be another sign of a battery or charging system problem.

I have seen 14V on mine while idling before and it generally runs ~13.2-13.9 while cruising above 5k rpm's.

Thats good news at least, sounds pretty much the same. I guess at this point we will just have to try the new battery tonight and see what happens.

Thanks for the help everyone. It turns out it was the battery. We tested the bike with my friends battery and it started right up.
