Saitaniya Headlight/Fairing

What do you think of this?? Rather than shell out the $500 bucks for the fairing I think I will spend the $$ on a headlight cover from the many options and chop it up....I really dig the look.

I like the side-profile, but from the front I think the bridge is a little too thick. Are you fabricating this or buying? If buying, link please.

I found the link from another member http://japan.webike.net

Just enter Ninja 250r into bike search and prepare to hide your wallet.

I am thinking about making something similar...I will probably start tonight

I like it except for the 2 black strips of "something" up near the mirrors. Are those to mount the mirrors? Looks really out of place.

sorry, don't really like it. maybe those black strips would look cooler if you had a black wind screen though.

The black strips are extra crap so just imagine them out of the way....

I know...there is a possibility of many bad things to come from browsing that site.

I decided to use a little fiberglass to test the look out on my bike. I covered the front fairing and headlight and made a form using clay. I then laid up some fiberglass and trimmed it to fit. Not quite sure how I feel about it but it looks ok.

If I can get a busted headlight to work on I have something even more dangerous

Right now I am still trying to figure out the best/easiest way to make it. If I figure it out I might make one or two and send em out. No promise though...it's a PITA because I ride everyday.

How about these?

I am just kind of tossing things around in Paint. Bondo is setting up on the light "splitter" I made so I am just waiting to shape, sand, and paint.

The "round eye" version would actually be two tubes that would have 2 1/2 HID's inside each tube.

Lol, yeah, I bought PS a long time ago and got pretty good at it but since then that computer went down and I don't have the install/code anymore. I do have a decent program Paint.net that is like a bare bones PS but I still never use it.

Jus keepin it OG you see!

excuse my poor paint skills, but you get the idea.

I think we should try for more of a evil eye type, right now the ninja has more of a angel eye IMO.

yeah I noticed that, looks sick. I was at walmart the other day and found those gimmicky chrome/mesh vents that go on cars, found some small enough and I even though of buying them to see how they would look LOL. The real thing looks 1M times better!

bout the lights, I wouldn't know how to even start. I guess the best way would be to do a Fiber glass piece, we would have to take the light out, put the cover on and install again. No experience with fiber, how hard is it?

FBG is actually pretty easy. Trickiest part is mixing the epoxy right so it sets and cures properly.

so I was watching a few how to vids for fg.

since we wont be doing it from a mold, We will have to use the actual headlight as a referance.

If I undarstand correctly we will have to
  1. Take headlight out
  2. somehow cover the headlight with something very thin that will become part of the FB piece, protecting the headlight.
  3. set the glass on top of headlight, once dried take off and use a dremel to cut to desire shape.
  4. apply filler and sand several times to get a smooth surface
  5. apply primer and sand again this time getting it as smooth as posible
  6. paint desire color (will need a paint booth or some kind of sterile area)

I am willing to give it a shot, but it does sounds like a lot of work and probably wont be doing it this month but deff a project I want to do.

see if you guys can come with a better evil eye design, that will deff encourage me lol!

Use foil. It's what guys use when making custom sub boxes and it works great. Keeps things from getting on the surface you're trying to protect and won't dissolve from the epoxy. The part touching the headlight doesn't need to be super smooth because it won't be seen, just the exterior. Other thing you might consider is how thick you want the part to be. You may need several layers. I actually have a spare headlight I could experiment with if I was motivated enough to do so. lol

I used foil when I made the splitter piece I posted earlier. It turned out OK but I didn't like the "tacked" on look.

Lately I have been thinking about making a mini speed triple as my wife really likes the look and she will be riding full time soon. That will solve my headlight woes, lol. If that happens I will be definitely continuing the research on my take off parts.

I was trying some stuff out with paper on top of the headlights, just to see how it would look. if you look near the bottom of the headlight, the fairing is about 1 1/2 inches above the actual light, so we would have to make it flush with the headlight. just a thought.

Edit
we could sandwich a piece of Styrofoam between FG to fill the gap too

When you make the filler panel you would wrap the front fairing and headlight in foil. Then you would use a filler, like spray expanding foam or clay (hardest) to even everything out and create designs, openings, mounts, etc. Then you can lay your fiberglass over your foam or clay molds and you will have the edges and depth appropriate. If you made the part flat against the light and then tried to space it out then you would get weird fitment and gaps due to the different dimensions.

Not sure if I explained it well but if you fiddle with it the idea will come. I just wish I had more time to make custom glass parts.

that sounds like the easiest way to do it, clay is easy to sand and mold to what you want. how is foam? not as hard but how easy is it to work with?

this is what it should look like at the end, just look at the headlights not the rest. there will be less of a gab between too.

The foam can be sanded and filed used a body filler file set just like the clay. It is easier to apply IMO however the clay is less mess.

I still feel the best bet is to use a race headlight fairing and to cut out the holes. If I don't go with a naked look I will look at this option after I move.

I plan on either molding a lens cover using the stock light, cutting a race fairing to accept either two projectors, the stock light, or other lights. If someone is able to start sooner I have no problem helping to brainstorm until I can get settled in and back to work.

I know that nose is part of the kit for an old ZXR250, but that "vent" in the middle gives me an idea....

I know people have tried a ton of different airbox mods, like drilling holes in it, or just taking it off completely and running an open K&N oval filter, but has anyone tried a Ram Air mod?

Basically take one of these bodykit noses, use the vent to run a tube to a sealed airbox, see what kind of power you get at speed.

It helps the bigger bikes get more power at speed, but would it work with a 250?

The bigger bikes use fuel injection that compensates for increased air at higher speeds. I don't think our carbs will do much. It's possible to get more air and you can probably jet the carbs to tune it. No idea if the end result will be worth the effort.

Using a race fairing is a great idea. Just gotta figure out how to mount the head lamp since I doubt they integrated the mounts on them.

Only problem with expanding foam is it leaves air pockets and those are a pita to deal with sometimes. Slathering on layers of bondo to cover them up suck.

Yeah, spray foam has to be done very carefully and you have to shake settle and deal with the pockets that stay behind.

As far as mounting in the new fairing all that would be needed is to fiberglass some long nuts inside the fairing. I have used thinwall PVC to hold a long nut (or any nut IMO) and then I temporarily epoxied in place then glassed aroung and up the PVC pipe. After painting it black it looks factory. For adjustability you can use allthread or longer bolts with extra nuts.
