Front brake modification.

Hi Guys,

I have do some changes on my front brakes. Because of the terrible brakes I decided to change the brake calipers and MC.

So I buy a Nissin caliper from a CBR600F and a Brembo MC from a R1.

As you all know SV Racing is producing this adapter but it was to expensive for me because of the shipping and money transfer cost etc. So I decided to make it myself.

First I make some prototypes on the 3D printer.

The needed caliper adapter I machined at my self. It was the most difficult topic in this project. I have used one of the strongest light metals 5083 aluminum for the braket.

The differents is very big. The bike decelerate very fast.

Next step is to change the hoses to stainless steel hoses.

I'am very satisfied with the result.

Here some pictures

VERY nice work! Congratulations. You ought to make more and sell them.

Yes, very nice work, but I wonder why your front brake was terrible before. What pads were you using? I find the stock brake on my 250 excellent. I'm using EBC HH pads. What pads will you use with the new caliper?

Hi Jim, I had use EBC HH pads as well. Now are use EBC HH again on these caliper.

No Ninja 300 brakes are not exellent when you compare with other bikes brakes. The stoping distance and the friction force of the little 2 pod calipers is to low.

I think it is to undersized brake system for so a heavy and fast bike.

I wondering how you a satisfied with stock brakes.

Maybe I'm used to vintage bikes, so the 250's brake feels very good. I'm able to lock the front wheel with it, or when applied just right, do a "stoppie" without any trouble.

Very nice work!

Looks like there's benefit of weight savings as well. How much does the new caliper+bracket weigh compared to stock units? Saved about 1-1,5 kg?

I'm just baffled that you'd go that distance without trying the braided steel line first. I race with stock plus sintered pads and steel lines with no problems. Two finger braking on the end of the straights. Replacing the caliper/MC would DQ the bike from Supersport races in my club. I'm sure you'll get more stopping power with your setup, but you're also going to be more likely to lock and tuck, especially in a panic braking scenario. Sometimes weak brakes act like ABS .

Dear Burphel,

My bike has ABS. I need more friction power before the front tire is locking. This was the point. The stock caliper is not so powerfull to hold the rotors.

I dont know how can I explain this

At the weekend I will change the MC to stock. I think the MC is too big for these caliper pods.

And of course I will share the results.

Does the ABS still work with a different caliper?

It should work, as the ABS sensor & computer has no idea with caliper is being used. They only analyze wheel-speed. The algorithm goes something like this:

1. sensor picks up wheel-speed using tone-ring on wheel.
2. computer checks wheel-speed
3. if wheel's spinning, everything's OK
4. if wheel's not spinning, reduce brake-fluid pressure
5. go back to #2

The more sophisticated systems may analyze both front & rear wheel speeds, throttle-position, lean-angle, etc. They are also more analogue in their action where they may not just look at wheel locked yes/no, but looks at rate-of-change of speed to catch it sooner. And also the brake-fluid reduction may be done in smaller increments for less intrusive action (less pulsing/shaking).

The somewhat excessive lever travel was the issue for me. H ad maxed out the lever adjuster so I fixed it by welding a small nub where the adjuster contacts the part that presses on the MC piston. This moved the lever out to where I had more adjustment. I also put a little part from SV racing parts that moves the whole master cylinder away from the bar about 5mm: http://www.svracingparts.com/store/#...egory=10561192

No problem with braking power now. I do have an EBC floating rotor for weight savings and durability but just fixing the lever travel was the real key

Heck, for $10.00 I've gotta try the spacer. My adjustable brake lever pulls up a-little too tight to the handlebar grip.

Thanks,

Bill

FYI

Braktech is getting some custom racing pads made for the little Ninja’s stock caliper. Ferado Cpro.

I’m going to try some on my race bike, as soon as they are available. (Hopefully in time for the Australian WSBK round)
Under the rules I must use stock MC (unfortunately) and caliper.
I’m used to a little “more brake”, also racing some Supermoto bikes.

They, Braketech, are also going to offer their very fancy discs for the new Ninja 400 (whatever that is). Not sure if they will fit the 300. I use their cast iron version on my Supermoto. The stainless version would be “legal” on my SS300 bike.

Not sure about foreign markets, but US-spec bikes didn't get 4-piston front-calipers until the CBR600F4.

Nice mod but I'm cheap and scored ebc hh pads for $12 & SS hose for $6 on eBay.

a 15 or 16mm master works good with this setup. There are brand new Nissan ones on ebay for a good price
