neutral delete?

hi guys! long time reader, first time poster.

I was having a flick through the shop manual and came across this...

chapter 9, page 29
Shift Drum and Fork Removal
•Split the crankcase (see Crankcase Splitting). •Remove the neutral positioning bolt [A] and take off the washer [B], spring [C] and pin [D] from the upper
crankcase half [E].

my question is: if I remove C & D will this mean I can't select neutral?
it's a bit of an odd thing to do but I never click to neutral unless I'm stopping and shutting her off, and it will eliminate the chance of slipping to neutral accidentally, through a soft shift or otherwise.

I have no idea, but you can false neutral between any gear, so I doubt it will solve the problem 100%.

Leave those parts in. removing them wont accomplish anything good. That is your shifter detent.

Welcome, Steve !!!

If you remove C & D, that will mean that you will not be able to select any gear.

The mechanism is a positioner for the selector (which is a multi-cam) to rotate to an specific angle corresponding with the engagement of the selected set of gears.

Note that part 13145 of the schematic, over which plunge 92043 exerts pressure, has seven valleys for selecting seven positions: 1, N, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

ok, thanks guys! I didn't think it would fix my problem, guess I just have to get better at clutchless shifting... (that's the only time it happens)

so why do I hit neutral sometimes? although the clutch is in good condition, it has nothing to do with clutchless shifting, right? is it something worn in the gear box or just an imperfect system that I just have to deal with?

Because you need to SHIFT! Not just shift.

Act like you mean it and you won't find them often, if at all

When shifting without the clutch you need to shift quick, hard, and have timing, it's a learning curve thing.

An interesting idea of a transmission with no neutral, but instead some sort of clutch lever lock.

yeah there must be a bad habit I've gotten into, I've been riding for about 6 years on and off, my timing seems good to me, I'm a short bloke (but not little!!) maybe I'm consentrating on where I'm going and not what I'm doing? I just thought it was a mech thing coz my 95 ZZR250 never did it, my 05 ZZR always did it but my 07 pregen in ZZR250 frame very occasionally did it, now my 08 ninja was starting to do it.... as I'm writing this I think I probably shouldhv lead with it...

and I've never heard of a clutch lever lock @xorbe

you could have a shop cut you a new star with no neutral valley. that would eliminate neutral. probably only cost $50. you can still get half-shifts. don't pussy foot the shifter. don't kick it, but...

once you start applying pressure, really make sure it goes all the way. continue with pressure through the stroke. and hold it there for a second.

if it doesn't feel like its all the way in there, its probably not. a blip of clutch with pressure will get it all the way in.

Almost all bad shifts, are just that bad shifts, lack of pulling up hard enough, but don't overdo it, be firm and quick, also clutchless shifting requires a throttle input changes, even the slightest ones can make a difference.

Every transmission is different, just got to keep practicing.
