This kind of crap scares the crap out of me while I ride. I will avoid heavily wooded roads purposely at nite to avoid this horror. Thank God that guy was ok... Jeeez.

Holy Crap! I was at Summit that day, on the Shenandoah track! It had to have happened on the Main track. And it stormed it's butt off that afternoon too. Dag that is crazy...

I came across a doe on sunday afternoon running across the road less than 10 feet in front of me. I was so shocked that i didn't even react just rode on through and cursing at the deer for reminding me how fast something bad can happen unexpectedly.

I saw this last week, here is cameraman in his own words

"the Heavyweight SOLO dropping down the hill for Turn 4, I was getting ready to make a pass around the outside, as I did the lap before on Tim Wilson. In the corner of my eye I saw a deer as I was just about to shift into 5th gear. A deer ran across the track and Tim hit it as there was absolutely no time to avoid the incident. I ran over the deer just after that and was able to stay up! I saw Tim heading towards the wall at an extremely high rate of speed as I was also. As soon as I was able to recover I noticed the MARRC corner workers already in full force looking to get the situation under control. Although Tim did not actually impact the airfence too fast, I know the airfence would have prevented much more from happening. He dislocated his shoulder and dislocated his pinky."

So on this same note, what DO you do if you are, say, in the mountains (or heck, on a track) in a tight corner and BAM there's a deer? I know the importance of riding only as fast as you can see, but I've often wondered just what I would do in this case. So, you're rounding a corner and right in your line is a deer...you're too leaned over to brake in that moment. How do you react?
And ouch, that was an awful hit!

Conventional wisdom is to try and avoid hitting it, of course.

If that means swerving left or right as braking won't have enough of an effect before you hit 'em, so be it. One controversial thought is that if it gets to the last second, and you're 100% sure you are going to hit it, to get back on the gas. Rather than hitting the deer while you're still braking hard with the bike up on its nose and unstable. Under power, the bike has more stability and weight balance, and if you do either knock the deer to the side or even slice through it (has happened many times at highway and highway+ speeds), there's perhaps more of a chance of keeping the bike upright after the impact.

I dunno. Deer scare me. Many times it seems like there's nothing we can do, other than not be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Anyone who needs more assurance that they are a risk for even the safest and most experienced riders only has to remember what happened to Larry Grodsky awhile back. The man was nationally known for a motorcycle safety column, for cripes sake, and deer got him.

I've heard of that...if there is no time to slow down (ie: in the middle of a sharp corner), I've heard you should aim right for the deer b/c though deer are unpredictable, they are not very likely to remain in the same spot when you're coming right at them. I've heard that's better than trying to guess which way it will run. I'm not sure about that logic, and I sure as heck don't know if I'd be able to do it anyway.

From what I understand, a deer in survival mode will zig - zag in a random fashion to avoid a predator (you on your bike). Best bet in deer country is not to over drive your line of sight. YMMV.

We get a lot of deer out here and I actually got hit on my rear door the other night and bent up my car. On my bike one time doing 80 or so on the highway i sloshed through a dead one and I almost went down. Luckily I smelled it coming from a bit away and was prepared and actually could have avoided it if i wasnt in construction.

Actually, I'd pay to see that. LOL

We get them out here where I am quite a bit. Lucky for me, they have all be more than 50ft away from me, so I get a bit more breathing room.

Actually "Deer in the headlights-look" specifically describes a deer frozen in place due to fear.

Wow, interesting connection! And so true! It's just so hard to predict those creatures' next move. I try to always ride "as far as I can see", so hopefully I would see it in time to straighten up and shed some speed at least...assuming no one was coming in the opposite lane.

One thing with deer is that at night, even if they pick up a little light from your headlights, their eyes will reflect back. That's why I run wide angle fog lights at night--fog or no fog. When I see those little lit up dots, I slow to a crawl. Moose are another story entirely. They are huge and reflect nothing back. They are also incredibly stupid. I once waited a good five minutes for a moose to cross. He just stood there looking huge.
