Hey guys! Have been interested in a Ninja for some time now but have always had the parents issue. Now the time has come to move out and I have begun shopping for a 250! There is a very small dealer a couple miles away from my house and he has a bunch on the lot. Here is the link to the one I'm interested in the only issue is it has 18k miles on it or perhaps that is not an issue at all I am no expert what do you guys think?

You can find a better deal with less milage. I paid 2500 for 2011 with 5500 miles.

Welcome!, good luck looking for a bike. The one you listed doesn't look like anything special to me, and it has high miles and price is not that great at least for my area. I think you could probably do better.

And aftermarket graphics on any bike always make me wonder about crash history.

keep us posted and enjoy the forum

I would not be concerned about 18,000 miles, if he can show all the oil changes were done when it needed to be done but like Joe said the graphics could be just to cover a crash. If it is in good mechanical shape get the price south of 2k.

Welcome, Max. Good luck with your search. Just remember to be patient and not jump on the first perceived deal. I know how it feels to be ready to buy a first bike after battling with family over it for years.

Since you want a red Ninja, check out this one close to you http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/mcy/4495041187.html

My seller wanted 3000 as well and I got him to sell it for 2500. Talk to this guy, if it's still available.

Here's another http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/mcy/4528181577.html

Good luck in the hunt for a bike! Be patient and you will find a good deal! And if possible bring a buddy that knows bikes well and could possibly test ride it with you (or for you if you can't yet). Its always good to have a 2nd opinion on things like this anyway.

For the '08, 18000 sounds like a lot, but it is a 6 year old bike. Which works out to 3000 a year, or 250 miles a month (being in Austin, I'm presuming a long riding season), not that much riding at all.

I would be more concerned on the maintenance history during those six years and what has been done, or more importantly, what hasn't been done.

The aftermarket fairings/paint scheme do make me a touch suspicious as most folks only change those when damage has been done - as already mentioned. Though there is the possibility the owner hated the stock scheme and just got a new design for the heck of it.

I do second the general opinion that the price is high for the age of the bike. Keep looking, get a ballpark price of your area, and if you are sold on this bike as the One, take your buddy and your knowledge and talk the owner down.

BTW, preachy moment, if you have never ridden before and only your buddy is teaching you how, unless he is an instructor, i *strongly* recommend taking a formal training course. Classes can show you all the basics, the proper way to ride, and give you a skill set that you can build from. Friends teaching have all the right intentions, but can easily miss things, or show improper techniques built from how they learned. /preachy

Like the others have said...

18,000 miles is just broken in, but there are some required maintenance items that they should provide evidence for.

The graphics are kinda cute, but why did they put them on? Look closely to see what they might be trying to hide.

Always keep in mind that there are other 250s out there, make sure you're getting a decent deal before you hand over the cash.

Yeah? Your point?

That's only 62.5 miles per week. I have to do that much simply to get to the next city.

No it isn't no way is it only 62.5 miles a week, that would mean over the course of 2 years (I assume you got your bike in June 2012 since that's your join date) you would have only 6,500 miles.

You have 48k+

So, let's see. there are 52 weeks a year, x 2 = 104 weeks, 48,000 divided by 104.... is.... anyone?

The answer is 461 miles a week, which is a conservative number since i'm sure you've gone more than 48k since you haven't updated that in a while.

Not bad though, if I lived where you lived I'd probably rack up the miles too. I'm glad to see your ninjette made it to 48k no problems... what kind of maintenance have you had to do?

No no no, thought you were saying "Sure, NV wolf would say 250 miles isn't much!" So I was talking to our new friend Max on how 18k isn't much over a 6 year period, that is only 62.5 a week.

Let's not thread jack his introduction so I'll answer the question as its already posted. If you want to talk more, let's open a new thread or take it in PM. Sound good?

I do the basic maintenance such as oil changes myself, which I stretch to every 5k by using synthetic. At every 10k, I take her into the shop to do the more complicated services, such as anything engine related. So far, only had expected problems like needing to replace steering bearings, brake pads, fork seals, tires, chain, sprockets, etc. No major problems.

Hoping to get as much life out of my engine as I can before needing to do a heart transplant.

I got her May 18, 2012 and the 48k is still correct. Well, 48,500ish. Haven't gone riding in two weeks as I baby my wrist until I figure out what I did to it. It took me a little bit to find Ninjette after I got my bike.
