Pre-gen and new-gen shocks are actually very similar. It's swingarm linkage knuckle that provides most of benefits with increased leverage. About 2x as much leverage with new-gen linkage. You can actually fit new-gen linkage, dog-bones to pre-gen to get 80% of improvements.
Also very simple upgrade to replace entire rear-end with new-gen: - swingarm - knuckle - dog-bones - shock - brake-caliper & carrier - rear wheel & axle Then you'd get 100% stiffer rear-end and can use 17" tyre for much larger selection. I got entire rear end off another racer for $50... needed 2-hrs of cleaning, but fully useable. Really transformed handling of my 2002 commuter. I might have spare new-gen shock I can send you. Start with that and assemble all other pieces around it over time...

I have a shock, and I have the linkage. Comes off a low-mileage 2009. Probably only had about 10,000 miles on it when removed.
