Winter Gear what are you rocking?

When I bought my gear I decided to buy something that would work all year round. But now that i've ridden in the cold the two things i'm thinking about getting are knox cold killer gloves and a hood.

Any feedback as to how good these two items are?

Also here is my winter gear:
Scorpion All-In Jacket and Awe Pants. They both came with built in removable heat and water proof liners and so far riding at 40F I'm nice and toasty

At the moment in RI it is low 50s in them morning to mid 60s mid day. I have my Tourmaster vented jacket with the rain liner and quilted liner in it. Was cold and about to switch to my leather jacket then noticed the 2 velcro pieces behind the zippers. Connecting them together blocked the airflow in the jacket. Switched to non vented leahter gloves in the morning though.

Riding in the winter, IN CHICAGO? Wow, you are one dedicated Ninja rider. I'll have to answer that when I find out where the winter is that I will be riding in. Might be a rental car.

My first winter in Chicago I drove a 350z with summer tires. Needless to stay it was an interesting experience.

The cold is really not that bad as long as you have proper gear. The only problem I am currently facing is the air hitting my neck which I was thinking about getting the knox hood.

I've been wearing my JR Ballistic pants and my new Tourmaster Transition II jacket... was 35 when I went to work Thurs morning last week and I was perfectly warm at highway speeds with the exception of the hands

Just slippin in my liners for now, we don't get that cold as yet. However last nite I noticed a great deal of fogging up of my glasses. So on went the "Foggy" breath guard late last nite. Purchased in the summer so now I get to try it out. May zip around tonite to check its performance out.

7:30 pm to 9:30 pm: Foggy worked like a charm. Kept the warm air below the nose, increased warmth in the lower facial area. Kept glasses and inside of Scorpion shield completely fog free. Lifted shield and rode for a little bit. Face kept warm where Foggy sits. Twisted head up down and left/right, tucked position, foggy never shifted nor disturbed the placement of glasses. I'm impressed and its all good. To remove helmet took a little more coaxing because of the placement of Foggy but once I was familiar with the angle it came off just fine without disturbing the velcro placement of the Foggy.

Total thread hijack - I'm interested in how you're applying the TENS. I have one and this cute girl I know is a chronic migraine sufferer...

I use it on my neck and upper back - a pair on each side of my spine - make sure to never cross the spine...
the top is right near the hairline and the second is near the top of the shoulder and about halfway out from my neck, repeat on the other side- I use the alternating ramped burst mode at a setting that allows my hubby to visually see the muscles contracting - works pretty well - when I was preggers it was the only thing I could use aside from tylenol, so I got used to it pretty quickly and it still works nicely

Hm... excellent! Was the unit prescribed specifically for the migraines, or did you have it lying around already?

It was for the headaches - I have chronic daily headache, and that's what I got from the PT visits... massage was great too

in central indiana its downright chilly in the mornings already. i've put the liner in my exl leather and since i've been too lazy to buy any lowers yet, im stuck with levi's. i've already started wearing thermal underwear upper and lower so its not too bad. its already 40º in the morning but can get up to 65-70º in the afternoon, so the afternoons can get a bit muggy in leather and long johns, but its tolerable.

i actually had to look up what a TENS unit was. i thought you were refering to hydrocodone 10mg, which i take daily for my neck and lower back. after looking it up, i HAVE to get me one of those. i remember being put on something similar at my chiropractor and the look on her face when i kept telling her to turn it up lol.

Oh goodness I love Baklava. I lived in the middle east for 3 years as a child and became addicted to those little guys. The pistachio ones are to die for.

Being Canadian, I'd like to think I know a thing or two about riding a motorcycle in winter. I do it a lot more then I'd like. Depending on the average temperature, I will wear different things.

If the temps are 0-10 degrees C, (32-50 degrees F for my southern friends), I wear a standard leather motorcycle jacket that is a size too large that allows me to fit a hoodie and underarmor. The jacket I use for this purpose is an Ixon Ironman which has a zip-in liner and a waterproof layer. It is great for this.


I'm wearing it there on the right and its not really anything special but it works well. I wear a scarf around my neck and warm gloves. Thats it.

When the temps drop FURTHER and snow starts flying, I wear my snowboarding gear. I wear Icon Field armour underneath it and fleecy Pajama pants under jeans or I just wear my snowboarding pants.


Here I am enjoying a wonderful March day in Canada! It was a nice ride actually. The jacket is a Ripzone snowboarding jacket.


Here is the vest I wear under the jacket.

A warmer scarf around the neck and little heat pads are a must at these temps. Glove choice is vital here!

Rode in to work in Boston at 65, came out and rode 26mi. back (counting an hour and a half tootling in the city...) and my fingers were numb for a bit (summer gloves), and face was a bit chilly since I had to ride with the visor cracked for ventilation and visibility. Otherwise, very good! Warming up with a chicken and rice dinner, maybe a side of vodka-mixy-something :-P

I have a new addition now Yesterday my dad gave me his old heated vest - works fine, he just had lost the connector and bought a new one instead of a new connector... so I need to search a connector, but I'm excited!

not strictly winter gear, but I added this (not modeled by me this time), kinda hard to see over your shoulder, and to look up as it sits right in at the back of your neck, but I guess thats the point really.

No mine don't squeak. Have you tried drying them completely? Also, take off the toe plate and clean it proper.

Dainese boots don't squeak like the others from my experience (and I mean EXPERIENCE!). LOL!

I find it''s my hands that get cold first. It's been frosty with temps around -2 to +5 this week and I'm okay except for my fingers. The best glove I've found so far is a pair of leather work gloves with fleece lining. They're not good in the rain.

Some feedback on the Knox Cold killer gear..I have a pair of their undergloves and I really like them. Its a bit limited, but I wore JUST the underglove in about 50 degree weather going about 60mph and my hands were warm/almost sweaty. My riding buddy uses the jacket and rode all last winter with it and he loves it. I'm gunna order one sometime this month.

My winter gear...actually, I don't think I can ride at a consistent speed at anything below 40 degrees, but I did do 400 miles of 45-55 degree weather two weekends ago with this gear.

1) Alpinestars RJ-5 Rain Coat over my Fieldsheer Razor Jacket (has perforated leather)


2) Fieldsheer Aqua Sport Gloves over the Tourmaster Silk Glove Liners (pretty warm, I was riding all weekend in below 50 degree weather at a constant 65-70mph with this combo)



3) Fieldsheer Apollo II Pants (very little breathable fabric, no problems in the cold)


4)HJC Balaclava (this thing was really annoying, as the eye hole is too small. It got into my field of vision and felt weird, not recommended, but it is damn comfortable)



I love Fieldsheer. They have made products so perfect for me! But I don't think I'll be riding much more this year...it's getting pretty darn cold! I guess it's not winter gear, but it did extend my riding season a couple of months! Not bad for about $100 in cold weather gear...

Just picked up some Alpinestars Drystars cold weather gloves. Unlike real Alpinestars stuff they are made in China. Look like basic winter gloves with a suede like palm and their logo. However I rode to work on the highway today at 80-90 mph (indicated) in 38 degree weather and they kept my fingers warm and allowed me to comfortably grip the bars.

I got my knox hot hood and knox cold killer gloves today. I have to say the fit and finish are great! I ordered a medium in the gloves to fit under my large held gauntlet gloves. Now I just have to wait till the rain stops (its been raining nearly the whole week) to go out and test the new stuff. Here are some pics:


I would love to walk around the my apartment building with just the hood on. I bet I would scare the sh*t out of people! lol

Hey, i just bought Knox Cold killer Gloves & Hot Hood 2 from STG.com (im a local customer)

the Hood, one size fits all, my heads Large, not HUGE. Its thin & fits snug, not TIGHT!
Im able to wear it UNDER within my Scorpion 700 Burst helmet with a fair amount of ease! Thou, once you put your helmet over your head, youll have to flip open your visor, so you can reach in with your fingers and pull UP (alil bit) the NOSE of the mask, as it slides down as your sliding your helmet on! Another thing i noticed with wearing this... as long as you breath with the mask pulled up looking like a Ninja, It really CUTS DOWN on the moisture from your breathe, building 'condensation' within the Visor! (NOT FOG) *also your breath helps to add 'HEAT' inside your helmet. IMO this will prove useful More so, when temps are like 32-34 degrees!

Wearing this Hot Hood, your NECK/lower CHIN WONT get Cold! Thou the Material itself will be cool, and might give you chills... AFTER youve been riding for 1hr+
I also noticed a Pretty Noticeable DIFFERENCE in WIND NOISE REDUCTION, within my helmet, with my hot hood on underneath!!!
-next weekend im riding up north (michigan here) to my cousins halloween party, spending the whole weekend up there! I dunno how COLD itll be, but ill be wearing my cold killer gloves (underneath my alpinestar apex drystars) & cold killers hot hood 2, so ill give you guys an UPDATE on how warm it keeps me! or not?

the cold killer gloves, palm and BOTTOM part of the glove ARENT WINDPROOF, youll feel air flow though, its the 'breathable part' of the glove! the TOP/SIDES are windproof. BUT you still need a Winter/Warm glove OVER them to keep your hands warm. Again the Material itself becomes cold to the naked skin over about 1hr+ of pure riding!
(i rode with JUST these on my hands the other day when it was 41degrees out ("Its just DRY-Cold")

and as long as my hands stayed on the handgrips, the i didnt feel wind,etc! Open Palm up or outward, then the air passes through and BURRRR!

I wear MEDIUM cold killer gloves, i think you should get 1 size UP from the size of them that fits SNUG. To allow some space between your skin and the glove. a MEDIUM for me fits like a latex glove. their comfy, but if used as a baselayer with overgloves... my wrists area feel alil too snug combined with my Overglove on, therefore slowly losing cirulation... and giving into, causing hands to be cold after prolong use.
So IMO make sure your gloves ARENT Tight, go 1 size past that so their 'loose,but nice' and they should work better! Remember, if gear fits, but is "TIGHT", Tightness will lead too poor circulation, and that will lead too cold hands,feet,body pretty quick! So just go, (or try on first)..
1 size up then the TIGHT fit and see how that works! Snug is Good, TIGHT is Bad! IMO

I wear a scorpion hat-trick jacket... ** with just a T-shirt underneath**
(textile/mesh) and boy, even 37 degree weather WITH wind gusts of 35+MPH i DONT FEEL ANY WIND pass though. I did feel some wind/cold blow down the NECK of the jacket, but the cold killer hot hood FIXED that problem. I told scorpion of this and for them to maybe include a bigger, removable storm collar on next generations jackets from now on!
ScorpionUSA req's a Hat-tricks temp range be used within 50-110 degrees!
Im just saying it WORKS PAST THAT for COLD temps!
(no jacket is gonna keep you warm when temps are 32 or -32 degrees. Thats the point when you NEED electric heated gear,etc!)

My Duece Riding pants work good. I wore them with the airguard liner in, over a pair of MESH B-ball SHORTS, with my KNOX Knee Cross-guards, when it was 39 degrees last week (omw to STG afterwork) and they worked well. Only issue is i HATE having to adjust the ankle velcro straps and leave them in 'stock' position...lol
Every so often i would get a blast of cool air (Pants are pulled down and OVER my ankles and Riding Boots) up my ankle a lil. Mind you im still wearing low cut b-ball SOCKs still. a Nice pair of Thermal High Socks, and Long johns will solve this problem!
IMO wearing Blue Jeans UNDER the Duece Riding pants, with the airguard liner in... is just too snug (also with knox knee-crossguards on)
I would use tight fitting Thermal long johns instead of blue jeans... if needed underneath!

Reason is the Riding Pant itself is Baggy enough for the kneeguards,blue jeans,etc... BUT the Airguard Liner ISNT as BAGGY as the Riding Pants, therefore Limiting what THICKNESS of clothing you can wear, UNDER the Riding Pants W/ Airguard liner Installed! WITHOUT the Airguard liner... oh boy... youll feel LOTs of COLD AIR through the Riding pant... and THROUGH your Blue Jeans!
As ive found out! So its a Catch 22!

Ill give you guys more feedback after my trip in north michigan, temps next week will be even COLDER! :burr:

I went up to STG today around 430pm, and Brian Van saw me ride up to the curb and walk in "Dude your nuts, i dont ride once the temp drops below like 60 degrees...How do you like that Hattrick?".



I went there to pick-up my new Alpinestars Apex Drystar gloves! (XL)
I put them on OVER my cold killers for the ride home. They worked great, thou im sure after some time the thumb stretches and loosens up to make clutch shifting alil easier! I tried the Large over my cold killers.... just too TIGHT, XL seems Perfect, with or without cold killers on, underneath!
Dunno if their 'waterproof' yet!

Putting them on your hand, then in a bucket of water to me, isnt 'waterproof'.
Well i guess that is, but a TRUE TEST IRL, would be riding on your motorcycle in heavy rain for a good 30+ mins, to see if water can be FORCED* into/through the seams of the glove, onto your hand! (same goes for wind, but cold killers fixes what lil air your normally Naked hand wouldve felt)

I always wondered whether he was real or a figment of imagination lol. Also whether he was a cool guy or a douche. But I have to say it was a really good idea of him to put up youtube videos of each product and give a review! It really helped me decide on my gear.

I didn't know he still rode on the street. In one of his video's he said that he just does track days only.

Well here are my test results:

40F currently but it feels like 35F here in Chicago currently.

The knox hood is AWESOME! I did not feel a thing after riding for more than an hour. My neck was nice and warm.

The knox gloves are really great as well but similar to the problem you had Dave, my size large Held gauntlet gloves over my cold kills virtually numbed my hands due to poor circulation. I had to consistently squeeze my hands into fists in order to keep some blood flowing.

I tried to ride again without my held gloves and just the gauntlet gloves and it was great! However the only problem was getting used to the handlebars again lol. They felt so tiny compared to having both gloves on.

So here's the next question, can anybody recommend any good winter gloves? Also should I go to a size XL in winter glove to help with the blood circulation?

Also it was funny to see people stare at me just shocked that a motorcycle was out in this weather

Well, from my EXP and i can imagine... for motorcycling in the winter (cant in michigan with snow, nor would you wanna on dry ,dusty, salty roads)... for the Temps 35 and LOWER, you start to NEED the heated gloves,boots,etc!

BMW bikes pretty much ALL makes come with Heated Handgrips!
the F650GS demo i rode, man what a Nice feature!

Alpinestars Apex Drystar gloves, with cold killers, should be just fine for going to work or trips less then 1 hr (ish). But IMO if i were to ride up to the UP in michigan, id NEED Heated Gear or FREEZE and DIE!


Gloves 1 or 2 sizes Bigger, to wear over your Base glove should be fine. That all depends on the model or make of gloves. Im a LARGE in alpinestar gloves, yet only a MEDIUM in Teknic gloves!

1 size bigger, still allows you to WEAR them solo.... 2 sizes might be better for a overglove, but they will likely be TOO BIG too wear em solo!
