Oops!
I thought this thread had died so I hadn't checked it in a while. I missed round 2.
Thanks for all the positive comments. I think most of the questions are addressed on the site I put together for it: HTTP://corin.com/sensei

Great write up. As you propose, masses can follow if a few show the way. Unfortunately, my commute might be a little too tough for electric. I must have 75 mph top speed, cruise at 68, and a 50 mile range. If I could get up to speed with a 5000 rpm motor and 110 Whr/mile I could make it one way on a 72v/100Ah battery pack at 25% remaining but now they are too big to fit in the frame. For now, I will have to be content with my Honda CBR250R getting 84 mpg US. I am sure the people at Ecomodders would be very interested in your bike. I wil also check out elmoto for more info.

I could live with 160Wh/km (~250Wh/mile) if it could have similar performance as the current 250cc engine.

The battery tech just isn't there yet to make it practical for me yet.

If they can double the energy density, I could realisticly start commuting without needing to make special arrangements.

Sendler, yep that would be a lot of battery to pack on a Ninja 250 frame. Biggest I've seen was 90Ah Thundersky cells (http://www.evalbum.com/1407), and that was pushing it for ground clearance (IMHO). On a bigger frame, that wouldn't be as big of a deal though - it's the cost that would start getting in the way compared to the cost of a gas bike for the same run.

Definitely what your daily ride is like comes into play whether it's possible to make a switch. My downtown office is 13 miles away on surface streets (45mph tops) so it's very doable.

Do you park in a secure garage? Seems to me that the scavenger thieves would want to "liberate" that big ole battery for its contents.

At home, the garage is secure. At the office it's open parking, but not a high crime area. Not to mention it would be easier to steal the whole bike than get the batteries out in a parking lot - in which case a gas bike, being easier to use/sell/strip for marketable parts is a higher profile target.

Your assuming most thieves are smart enough to evaluate all that.
