gsxr 600 race bike

The following bike purchase was made possible by @Finesse and her chill shop, cycles of silver spring

Just picked it up today for $1,500 total (including some brand new Q3s)
It's fully prepped for wera and ccs racing, safety wired all around, complete oil tight setup (it's not sitting on a kickstand in these photos, there's a separate side stand used instead)

Cosmetically it's a well used track bike so I'm going to do a bit of work to it before riding it in this respect, just to make sure nothing is going to fall off the bike at speed

Suspension is from a gsxr 1000, so are the wheels which means the rear is running a 190/55 instead of a 180.

It's been sitting for a while so I'm going to bleed the brakes, change oil, drain the gas tank, and clean/lube everything before use.

I can only fit one of the bikes in my truck at a time it would seem so I'm going to measure the sound with a db meter to know if I can debut it at Jennings GP next weekend. I think it's below 104db after hearing it though but it's better to be safe than sorry

and now for some pics!

we have a new head of the pack here, team green's engines put together aren't enough to take this gixxer on in a straight fight

don't worry, I'm so much of a squid I wear my gear and head to the track to satisfy my thirst

She doesn't need much luckily, I'm picking up a db meter on sat along with a few other supplies so I'll know if she'll qualify...apparently it's 102db now instead of 104...

it's an '03 600, which makes it a K3. The bodywork is all aftermarket race stuffs though so it doesn't quite look like a typical K3. Whatever fairings it has is high quality considering how much of a beating it's obviously taken while still being usable.

I really hope it's 102db or below then since I was just going to follow instructions off of google

Does the track enforce the noise limit that closely?

I saw them enforce it but not strictly, I just don't want to push any envelopes since it has a full yoshi exhaust

You should be fine but you can check it using apps on your phone such as the one here. These are not 100% accurate but can ballpark it enough to let you know if you have to worry. Also, many phones will simply not work much above 100dB.

Start your bike
Start the app and get a reading at idle from about 20-25ft away (this lets you know how much your pissing off your neighbors lol)
Get a friend to hold your phone at 25ft away
Go back to your bike and rev it to 12k rpm and have them get a reading

Hopefully you're coming in at around 98 or lower when taking the readings from the exhaust side of your bike, NOT behind it. Ya, know... just like they do when they test your bike as you cross the start finish.

I have a gp pipe on my new r6, and it should pass. But I still have the stock cat installed which eats up a lot of sound.

SCORE!!!!

A working track bike for $1500? And a real supersport to boot?

I officially hate you.

Congratulations! Hope you don't uncover any nasty surprises.

the track 250 only ran me $650 total

and it's not a track bike, it's a fully prepped race bike that has a history with wera and ccs (the two orgs that I want to race with) that also has brand new dunlop q3 tires on it and some heavily upgraded suspension bits

I hope I don't either, but such is life. Racing isn't easy which is a large reason why I want to test myself at the track. One such test is bike failure and fixing it, anything short of engine failure I should be able to deal with easily on this bike and if the engine fails I'll just drop a 1000 engine in it

maybe the good karma I got from that came around and is why I have 4 bikes now ... and why my boss is throwing free SV parts at me.. not sure... will have to do some meditating

I like helping people get more into riding for less money in whatever way I can..

I looked into db meters and found that they're fairly inexpensive gadgets, and it'll be a pretty cool thing to have from time to time to prove to officers that I'm within noise regulations...barely...

"oh officer, are we being too loud? I'm sorry, we'll turn it down now. Have a great night sir" = the real thing to do in that situation though

I almost forgot @adouglas there's an sv650s track prepped in northern va (very close to dc) for ~$1,700 that looks to be in good condition if you're looking for a cheap dedicated track bike. That was my backup if the gsxr didn't strike me as a good bike for my purposes.

and I finally thought of a name for the bike "merlin" which is commonly used slang for maryland. This is because the bike's paint scheme reminds me of the state flag. I can't not see the resemblance now

@Jono we actually have an SV motor but it has a rod knock and as far as I know there are no future plans to fix it. it's just sitting in the back room. we also have two sets of forks and a set of calipers and triple trees.. my boss just gave me a front wheel, straight with both rotors in spec, cause i wanted black wheels and decided it's cheaper and easier to just buy wheels and sell mine, than paint them or powder coat them since they already come in black. he gave me the front wheel so I just bought a rear for $90 on ebay. he also gave me a competition werkes license plate bracket and offered to trade yoshimura exhuasts because mine is dented. he also gave me a black swing arm that I plan on swapping with my silver one when I get the time. he has TONS of good karma!!!

fuuuuuck, hole in the cover led to water filling the oilpan...there was some oil in the oilpan...

luckily I only need to scrub the rear tire a bit...excuse for a burnout anyone?

rush is legit, that is a serious list of parts you're getting katie. It sounds like paint is the only thing you're going to need to get for yourself

I'll get video if I do one, I'm gonna just scrub the tire a bit after letting the oil soak into the ground/dry then decide if it's necessary

don't let oil soak into the ground. just sprinkle kitty litter on it and clean it up later.

That's how I assumed it to be used in this circumstance, much like salt for ice
