Bent Shifter Replacement

Hi All,

I bent my shifter the other day by... parking it in neutral on a hill :X it moved and fell. The entire mechanism works fine but the toe shift is a bent.

I ordered the two following parts from bikebandit.com

13242A: LEVER-ASSY-CHANGE,PED
92161: DAMPER,CHANGE LEVER

from http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmot...8858#sch638178

I will be taking it into a non-dealer shop to get other things replaced next week as the parts come in. My big question is, are those two parts enough for the shop to replace? or did I have to order the whole shifter assembly?

Thank you

If all that is bent is the shift pedal, then the pedal and rubber damper is all you need. Inspect the linkage carefully. Check and see if the "boots" and tie rod are ok. If they are, the pedal should be all you need. Note: The nuts on the ends of the tie rod are used to make small adjustments in the position of the shift pedal. Replacing the shift pedal will require disconnecting one end of the tie rod. If you want your new shift pedal in the same position as your original one, note it's position before it is disconnected.

Thank you very much ninjaprof, I'm more of a noob when it comes to mechanical things than I am to riding. Machinery is a new thing i'm learning, and this forum is full of great information!

Why not just bend it back like Bob suggested? How much is the shop going to charge you to replace it?

I bent it back to a decent working condition, couldn't get it back to the normal stock position.

I had ordered the parts along with a bent left handlebar and a clutch lever. I think because of the high cost of the shifter, I may mail it back to bike bandit with the 20% restocking fee, minus shipping and restocking i think it will save me about $30 I think i was a bit over zealous with trying to get those parts replaced. Or should i keep it as spare parts and put it in a tankbag or backpack in case i drop the bike again.

Personally, I would just replace it if you can't get it bent back into the correct position. I'm pretty anal about wanting certain things to be the way they're supposed to be. If it's in rideable condition, you can always bring it over to my house and we can get that stuff replaced. That would save you some money from paying a shop at least and I have all the tools we need to do it. Are you replacing the bar end as well? Are you still coming out this weekend?

Yup, it's rideable! I'm a little anal about the ride position too. I will be coming out to the meet this Saturday, bent bars and all! Thank you for the generous offer of helping me replace the parts, I greatly appreciate it.I ordered everything i needed for the left handlebar, including grip, bar end, screw.

I will be coming out this Saturday for the meet! I will be there in Hayward to ride with you to Half Moon Bay for sure.

Sounds good . Just let me know when you get all your parts and we'll schedule a time. Did your grip get damaged too? I don't see a reason to replace that unless it's torn up.

I'm anal too but sometimes small damages like that give the bike some character. I'd just leave it for now unless it changes how it rides/feels.
