Do you wave while splitting (sharing)?
I was running errands today and hit everything here in NorCal. 680 South, san mateo bridge, 101...north and south, 280 and the bay bridge, some San Fran city streets, 24 and caldecott; which surprisingly was the worst for splitting, and highway 4.
I split decently, ok probably pretty fast, but I always try to show a thank you gesture when people swerve out of my way or they move over way more than necessary. Now it might sound weird but I think the people in front can see me waving or chucking up the deuces in their side view mirrors. A lot of people were clearing a huge space for me. Of course I don't always get a chance to wave but I try to get about 90% of cagers. Anyone do the same? |

Haven't split on the freeway during commute traffic, so I'll answer with my cager-hat on. In general, a pet peeve of mine is when other motorists don't show appreciation for general acts of kindness. If I clearly let you into my lane, give me a wave for goodness sake! I'd LOVE to get a wave for swerving left and giving a splitter some extra room. That said, I understand it's better for them to maintain both hands on the bike. So I don't mind it

Probably wise to keep hands on the bars while splitting. In France, Bikers tend to stick out their foot to say "Thankyou" after passing a friendly cage.
"You're not obliged to reply if the biker says Thankyou!" |

I'll give a wave if someone moves over for me to pass through, otherwise Ikeep both hands on the controls.

Either a nod or cock the leg off the side as the frenchies do. Both hands stay on the controls

I wave when I split on a bicycle at intersections. Or when someone makes a polite pass, I'll wave then.
If I'm on the highway in my cage or ninja, I'll flash my brights to a semi who's looking to change lanes to let them know that they've cleared me. They always respond with flashing their running lights after their lane change is done. That's the same idea. |

Neither is it illegal. It's undefined (some states define it and make it illegal) so I can do it pass a cop (which I've done before) without an issue. He can however pull me over and ticket me for something else (which can be successfully contested in court). Nice try though. I still split and I still don't wave to anyone. I'm just expediting my commute. There is no need for me to sit there like a bush in line and be a sitting duck for an inattentive driver.

If they clearly move out of the way for me I will always try to wave. The times I don't is when the splitting gets tight and I need both hands on just in case.

I always try to wave when they move over to give me room. It's all about positive reinforcement. If they move over and see that they are being appreciated, they'll most likely continue moving over bikes in the future. If they don't see appreciation in return, they might start to resent motorcyclist and stop being nice to us.

Back to topic, I also give a small wave if they give me room to pass during rush hour, unless I find myself busy, then I do not wave.
