Lighter Flywheel?

Anyone experiment with turning down their flywheel or drilling/balancing it?

I have not modified the fly wheel. I eliminated the counter balancer. No report yet, bike is going together very slowly, life has a way of getting in the way...

By eliminating the counterbalancer isnt this going to make the engine vibrate like crazy?

@spooph
The crank has to be balanced if the counter balance is eliminated.

Thanks for headsup X!

Yes, to eliminate the counter balancer the crank has to be balanced. At first, I didn't think it would do much, but after seeing the numbers it should make a marked improvement!

I sent the crank off to a guy with an expensive machine. Stock it was generating 1,7xxlbs of force at 12K rpm's. Re-balanced it is now generating 54lbs of force at 12K rpm's. With almost 1 ton of force eliminated from the crank bearings the counter balancer is no longer needed for engine health. The engine will vibrate a little more than it did WITH the balancer, but in the long run it will wear LESS on the crank bearings. I hope that makes sense.

It also means the engine has less weight to spin around and a piece of spinning metal which saps inertia has been removed. This is NOT a performance mod in itself. It is viewed as a power amplifier mod. In and of itself it won't gain you much, however it allow subsequent and "power mods" (higher compression piston, flow work, timing, etc) to be so much more effective. I think I'm going to migrate my build thread on newninja.com over here and continue it here. Some smart folks around here!

Sorry for the off-topic, but you asked....

Def interested in anyone that has tried a lighter flywheel on the Ninjette. I know its a popular mod on 4stroke dirty bikes.

My concern beside the oil holes that fed the now missing shaft.
Is stored inertia. I am curious how the engine holds RPM between shifts. And how much the launch is affected by the reduced inertia.

Yeah, there is trade off, and maybe too many negatives. I really enjoyed taking weight out of the flywheel and pulley sets on car builds and its a "to do mod" for the pit bike/mini moto crowd as it really helps the little engines spin up more quickly.
