The specs seem WAY too optimistic and the "donate" thing makes it sound like the guy just wants to profit off the hype like Project Ginger (AKA Segway). I am really curious to know if there's actually something to this.

I've seen similar RC toys that somehow stabilize. Parrot makes one with four stabilizers that is controlled by an iPhone.

Yeah. That and the top speed that rivals some of the fastest literbikes is what prompted the "overly optimistic specs" wordage from me. Lack of rolling resistance can't account for that when even more of the HP is lost to lift. Perhaps they are measuring engine-assisted falling speed as the "top speed."

Anyway, the engine couldn't possibly adapt to continue running with that altitude change, right? Airlines are pressurized to match 8,000 feet because it's still possible to breathe normally at that altitude but 10,000 may be pushing it. Would the rider need an oxygen mask?

Australian inventor Chris Malloy has built a hoverbike from motorcycle parts and claims it can fly up to 173 mph, at an altitude of 10,000 feet.

I have heard of that, and in the event it turns out to be a real thing (and not a con), I fully intend to save up and buy one!

It certainly looks the part, but it could be a con. It wouldn't be the first time someone has come up with a fantastic concept in order to encourage investors without ever intending to make a working product.

There's a company called Steorn that purport to have made a machine, called an Orbo, that is capable of generating free energy. I've been following it for a while, because I find it funny. They've suckered lots of people in. I'm an open minded person, but when people come out with fantastic concepts like 'a machine that generates free energy' or 'an awesome looking hoverbike', I'll want to see it to believe it. I wont take their word for it.

I've seen this before. If they could produce a very sophisticated gyroscopic stabilization system I'm sure it would be plausible. The variable that posses the biggest threat is the rider. Weight plays a huge factor in hovering vehicles. As you can see from the pictures it doesn't seem like they've gotten it to lift off the ground without tie-downs assisting stability. I'm sure if the manufacturer managed to complete this hover-bike with a an msrp of $40,000 it would be a big hit.....if it works safely. Obviously if you bought one of those bad boys you would need to take a class on how it could possibly work. I feel like if the propellers were 2-3 feet above the rider it would stabilize much more easily with the weight focused at a lower point (such as with a helicopter).

I think the 170 mph at 10,000 feet is just what it could conceivably do should it be refined and someone have a death wish. Someone should call Red Bull and have them try it out.

I just don't see the point of it. Weight is going to be a constant issue, so you won't be able to carry any load.

Anyone who has $40,000 to cough up on something so impractical may as well have enough money to buy their own helicopter.

Why does it have to be practical? @jamesio has spent the last couple of weeks jumping out of aeroplanes. Half the stuff humans do is purely ritualistic or intended to stimulate some positive feeling without a practical goal!

Also... I can think of some practical applications. Like: it could be used by search and rescue to fly to hard to reach areas, where larger, less manoeuvrable and more cumbersome vehicles cannot reach. The pilot could land, bring first aid and provide an on-the-ground assessment of the situation to the people who will have to airlift the stranded persons out of there.

Additionally, some small wings with ailerons would help stabilize and create a small amount of lift. Controls for those could be foot pedals.

Unfortunately I doubt the 250 would have enough lift......but we could totally make one out of a zx-14 and put 250r stickers on it.

LOL: ironically, we might find -- having built a hover Ninjette -- that it only generates enough lift to carry dainty girlies, solidifying the Ninjette once and for all as 'a girls bike'

Another problem is that the rider would have to be proficient at parachuting, unless you restrict altitude to less than 10'. It also would need lights like on a plane. Each wing has either a blue or red light so that other pilots can tell if the plane is coming or going.

It's a really cool concept, but it would have to become really mainstream for them to allow hoverbikes to travel in populated areas.

Same way a helicopter would move in any direction. You would tilt it in the direction you want to go.
