Hurm, two day adventure? Part 1 being the Little Dragon/Yosemite, Part 2 being Sonora and Ebbetts?

Ideas?

So I was telling a few folks about this trip over the weekend and apparently the concensus is that in Lee Vining the *only* place worth eating at is the Whoa Nellie Deli right at the end of Hwy 120.

I'm game to try it.

*bump*

Anyone else interested in joining up?

I may need new tires before this weekend but otherwise I am ready and willing. Should be a fun ride to end out the major riding season this year.

Maybe? But I've never ridden that many hours/miles in a day (what's the opposite of Iron Butt?) I'd be leaving from the Sac area.

Also, this might interest @twistywrist.

Everything looking good for 9/27! I get back from a work trip in Baltimore on the night of 9/25 and have my hall pass approved for the weekend. I'll probably ride my SilverAero ninjette rather than the streamliner so that I can have a bit more fun. Looking forward to this very much!

@algs26 We'll take breaks once we all meet up and get to riding together. I think when we all get together in coulterville will be a good chance to sit and talk about range (if anyone has a bike with lower or higher than average - *looks at @greenaero* ), or what everyone can do as far as seat time in one go, or what pace everyone is comfortable with.

I want this to be a fun and low key ride to just enjoy the roads and being around other Ninjettes. No need to prove anything since we all have the same/similar bikes.

Or we can talk about the basics here if you want so we can have an idea what we'll be getting into before hand.

Upside, the Bridge Fire is 10 miles east of Mariposa and I wasn't thinking of heading that far south if possible (turning around at Bear Valley since that seemed to be the end of the squigglies)...

However, looking at CalFire's map, the Jackson Fire is just north of where I want to turn to head up Old Priest Grade Road .... Hurm

Thanks for the heads up, will have to bookmark http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_current to monitor as the date approaches.

Indeed, it is a little bit away from where we plan to go, but they were speaking of fire personnel using those roads and some closures. May be a bit crowded than usual, so I hope it doesn't effect the ride. Driving in heavy smoke or fire would suck as well.

Agreed on the smoke part since, depending on wind, that could affect the entire area.

Go firefighters, go!!

65% contained and Hwy 49 reopened. But I could see the smoke from Ebbetts Pass today.

Wait they have a new fire, Meadow or something like that.

Not sure about my dancing skills. My rain dances haven't been very fruitful this last year.

I'm not too familiar with the planned route. I'm guessing Tioga Road through the map of the closure is our planned route?

Maybe some prayer to the rain gods might help too...

Yep, it is our planned route and the only way to get through the other side of Yosemite. If that road is closed, which it often is during winter, then Teri won't be able to get through and we won't be able to get through to Lee Vining. There are alternative routes, but it's not plausible for a trip like this, imo. Closing of Tioga road = Reschedule ride.

Oh I'd make it over one way or another. I may be very late for the meet up but I'd be down there.

We'll have to keep a close eye on that one. One the 7th it was 400 acres, the 8th was over 2000ac, and yesterday it was over 4400ac.

Poor Yosemite, really taking a pounding lately with all the fires.

Seems the Meadow Fire is slowing down but still in the area. The Bridge Fire is contained.

As I am living in smoke from the King Fire, I only have one comment: Stop burning, California!!

Ok, pinging those who have responded to this list:
@iamjacob, @greenaero, @algs26, @EternalNewb, @EMSRacer07, @Kevin1956, @misfitsailor

@tfkrocks, you still out?

For anyone coming along, simply PM me for my cell number. I will have my SPOT on me, but might be a good idea to think of who you'd like us to call in case something does happen to you. (Mine is easy, I have a dog tag on with two emergency contact numbers engraved onto it.)

I like the idea of meeting in Coulterville, that way we can ride the Little Dragon in both directions together and then head off towards hwy 120 and through Yosemite. Does anyone have a different idea?

TripAdvisor is showing a little cafe in the Coulterville general store, named the Coulter Cafe. Just called them, the store and cafe open at 7:30a so sounds like a good place to gather and grab last minute snacks and drinks. Let's say kick stands up by 9:15am?

There may be others, but I am at least seeing a Shell station a few miles up Greeley Hill Rd so gas is available (wasn't trusting Google so much, but Shell themselves say they have a station there).

Weather leading up to the weekend is looking like it's going to be mid-90's and sunny.

Riding style:

I don't mind leading the group, someone just needs to volunteer for the sweep. It'd be great is the sweep has a headset to talk to me (*looks at @antiant with the fancy smancy Sena*) but not sure how far the range on my 5 is.

I hate it when group leaders ditch me, so I will set my pace to whomever is behind me. Whoever feels they are the newest/slowest, that's where I want you to be. That way the group stays together and everyone can enjoy themselves. If you want to go faster, just hang back a bit to open up the distance or chill and enjoy smelling the roses.

I tend to ride 5-10 over the limit when in rural/remote areas, the speed limit in towns or through the Park, and on the twisties a very conservative pace. Given a choice, I do not pass on a double yellow. If we end up behind grandpa in the RV, I will find a safe place to pull over, let the group gather up again and let traffic get ahead a ways before pulling back out on to the road.

As a group, how often do you want breaks? Every half hour? Every hour? Every gas stop? How many picture stops in the Park do you want? AFAIK we can't see El Cap/Half Dome/Yosemite Valley from the highway, but I could be VERY wrong on that - so bring a camera.

Lunch will be at the Whoa Nellie Deli in Lee Vining, where there is also a Mobile gas station.

Bottom line - I will adjust my ride to the group to keep everyone together and having a good time. You ride your own ride and don't worry about geting lost or left behind. It's a rather straight forward route so just have fun.

Did I miss anything?

I'm definitely still in. Been looking forward to this ride for a few weeks!

I'm not as put together to have my ICE info on dog tags (super cool idea) but I do have an info card in my jacket and one on my bike. I'm definitely up for trading info with someone else on the ride though.

9:15 sounds like a good time for kickstands up. Hopefully not so early that anyone has to leave home too much before sunrise.

As far as the pace goes, as long as it's not a race then I should be able to keep up. NevadaWolf, your quote below sounds pretty much like my riding as well.

I'd be looking for a breaks somewhere around the 90 minute mark.

Other than that I figure we can talk about specifics when we get together and when we stop.

I'm definitely looking forward to meeting everyone.

$5, Wal-Mart pet department, pet ID tag kiosk.

They have the traditional military style dog tag if you don't want the sparkly pink heart.

Thanks for the heads up, algs26. I'm ashamed to say that I've never been to Yosemite... I would love to come but I may have an obligation that weekend, so count me as a tentative yes.

@twistywrist, @chrly It'd be awesome if your "Tentative" turns into a "Definitely".

@EMSRacer07, Boo but work before play. Maybe once this smoke clears out, we can find a weekend to go riding together again.

I had been looking for an IR map of the fire to see where it's moving to, but completely forgot about InciWeb's site. http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4104/

As of this morning, the Meadow Fire is 4,700+ acres and 80% contained. The map shows two fire lines that are still burning, but both seem to be moving away from Tioga Road (one looks like it turned to the east, the other is just crawling south). Yosemite's report is "Final Update" so unless something major happens within the next few days we can probably disregard this fire.

NO MORE FIRES!!

(Seriously, the King Fire is just going nuts and all the smoke is dumping right over the mountain into Nevada.... )

(Seriously, the King Fire is just going nuts and all the smoke is dumping right over the mountain into Nevada.... )

If something changes with my schedule I will let you know. But for now its set in stone.

And yeah def after the smoke clears. Smoke here in Reno gives me a headache to ride around in. Hope you guys dont hit a bunch of smoke when the day comes.

I've never done a group ride and I'm probably going to be the least experienced in the group. At the same time, I don't mind being the last person either, I get more time to lag () and yes, we'll have to sync the headsets. I like the plan of travel and timing. Also, the pace sounds like my style of riding as well. 90 minute breaks are fine with me, I have a Corbin now, so I'm good. Also, I've been to Yosemite, but never on the other side (Tuolumne Meadows, Lee Vining, etc), so I wouldn't mind stopping a few times in the park to take some pics. I think you and I are the same in that regard @ travel pics and adventures, so I have no qualms there.

I know of at least two good pull offs in the park... And I was wrong about seeing Half Dome.

Olmsted Point, along the Tioga Road, looks down on Yosemite Valley from the east--and from a very different angle. Though you might not immediately recognize Half Dome, it is one of the most prominent peaks you can see from Olmsted Point. The Tioga Road is open to cars from late May or early June to sometime in November.

Tenaya Lake is one of the easiest to get to (when the Tioga Road is open, late May or early June to sometime in November) and is quite popular for picnicking, swimming, and canoeing. You can see Tenaya Lake from Olmsted Point and as you drive past it. Two picnic areas are available (one of them is wheelchair accessible).

For those that want to have a good idea of the route and like maps, I've whipped this up really quick from Google.

Really is straight forward, but I want to make sure everyone knows where I'm planning on going.

Starting in Coulterville, Hwy 49 south to Bear Valley (approx half way to Mariposa).
Turn around, return back north on Hwy 49 to Moccasin
Right turn onto Hwy 120, taking New Priest Grade Road, to Big Oak Flat
Remain on Hwy 120 to Cedar Flat, turn left to stay on Hwy 120 (there is a HUGE sign)
Remain on Hwy 120 through the Park and exiting over Tioga Pass, stopping at Olmsted Point, Tenaya Lake, and maybe Toulumne Meadows Visitor Center.
Follow Hwy 120 down Lee Vining Canyon to Hwy 395.
Whoa Nelli Deli is just before the intersection of 120/395.

You should be able to click on the image of the map to get the huge 5MB PDF version.

I had a feeling it was arson with all these fires...

Courtney Fire, King Fire. More investigations are ongoing for the other fires that we have witnessed here too.
