I know it's legal in Cali. Still pretty dangerous.

My parents aren't legally responsible for me anymore, but I still wouldn't want them to see me lane-splitting because they'd probably freak out. Being legal doesn't make it any less dangerous.

I've recently purchased a Trail Tech Vapor an am curious about the positioning of the magnet for the speed sensor. Did you replace one of the brake disc mounting bolts or did you attach a magnet directly to the disc itself?

Magnet bolt, with a matching nut, bolted through one of the brake disk slots. You can also glue a
rare earth magnet to the disk, or just rely on it's magnetism to keep it there.

Look into getting some magnets that koso kits come with. I recently installed the rx-1n on my 05 and it came with 6 tiny magnets that fit right in the 5mm Allen holes in the disc bolts. Just make sure you put them the right way (north out). Now if only the tach wasn't so jumpy

Did you ground the gauge straight back to the battery? If not, give that a try and see if it helps with the jumpy tach. I had to do this on my Hawk with a Koso gauge.

Yes I grounded straight to the battery, thanks though. My best result to reduce jumpiness was solder a 100k resistor in line of the tach. It gave me a pretty accurate idle rpm of around 1200 but it's still jumpy at higher rpm. Not too big a deal I have faith in my ears, speed and mileage was what I was concerned with

Trail Tech recommends a 600K .25W resistor, and they sell a tach lead with one installed. I use one, and my tach isn't jumpy at all. I wired the red resistor wire to the bike's black tach wire and the black ground wire to the bike's accessory ground wire. All this is inside my headlight bucket.

It's just a Chinese light I found on Amazon. Pretty bright, and weighs next to nothing. Search "LED motorcycle taillight."

The bolt that came with my kit slides right through the brake disc slots. We must've got different parts.

Yes, you are right. I just looked at my brake, and I remembered it wrong. In this photo, you can see the bolt on the brake disk, near the bottom.

Pics of pregen Trail Tech Vapor mount

Some folks have asked for details of how we mounted the Trail Tech Vapor to the steering lock housing, so here they are:

We trimmed the lower tab of the Trail Tech mount, ground it thinner, and slipped it under the shroud. You can bend the mount to get the viewing angle you want:

Then we drilled through the whole thing and screwed in a couple of small bolts (which really aren't the right type, but they were the only small stainless bolts we had at the time):

You can see that the gauge is very close to the headlight (so much so that the air temp usually reads high from the headlight's heat), and that it could have been mounted directly to the headlight bucket with spacers.
Hope this helps.

I took the tach wire and inserted it into the left coil input. I think a 600k ohm resistor keeps the signal less jumpy. If you didn't get that with your wire you can either make one or ask them to send you one. If you need help making it yourself let me know.

+1 on this. But my tachs perfect.

The resistor cable part number is part 7000-1004 I believe. You'll have to call them and pay for it and for shipping. ~$10 USD, give or take.

New handlebar for the ultralight pregen

You may remember our lightened 2006 Ninja 250. We removed most of the bodywork, detabbed the rear subframe, and replaced the lights and gauges with aftermarket items. All this reduced the bike's weight by about 30 lbs.

We've long wanted to switch to a tubular handlebar for this bike, so we could lower the front end a little, and take advantage of all the different 7/8" bars that are available. Also, we wanted wider bars than stock.

We had a Renthal ultra-low handlebar in the shop, and a pair of Outlaw Racing bar mounts, so after a lot of measuring, we drilled the triple clamp and got to work. There's not much to work with on the pregen triple, unless you are able to fab something to translate the stock mounting holes to 7/8" bar mounts, so we decided to just drill two holes in the center section and mount the risers there. We placed a couple of nylon buttons under the mounts, and rubber spacers under the nuts that secure the risers under the triple clamp.

Seems to have come out well, and I like the feel and look (my daughter hasn't tried it yet, but she thought the clipons were "a little reachy," as she put it. If we decide to switch back to clip-ons, we can plug the new holes with plastic covers.

The Renthal bar is lightweight and has good vibration-absorbing properties, so the absence of bar-end weights doesn't seem to be an issue. The width feels good. The bike is probably too sensitive to rider inputs with the front this low, especially with wider bars, so we'll probably raise the front 1" to 1.5" from what is shown in the pics. We wanted to see the maximum before making final adjustments.

Just left the speedo drive in place on the wheel, with a plastic hardware store cap on the cable outlet.

Wow, this is one of the best looking pregens that doesn't belong to choneofakind (who owns the best all around pregen that I know of) beautiful build, well done. I especially love the addition of the renthal bars, it's so easy to just throw a pair of clip-ons on there but that's not really comfortable for daily riding or riding when you aren't being really agressive. The renthal bars solve the problem of the stock bars not looking quite right and make it more useable at the same time

It was from Speedmotoco.com, but the same light is available all over the internet. It uses a standard 7" reflector with an H4 bulb, and has a steel bucket. Build quality is good, and it provides a very good beam.

Did 90 mph on some farm road

Daughter reports seeing 90 mph on some farm road this afternoon riding with wealthy friend with Yamaha R1. Couldn't believe it until I checked the Trail Tech telltale. I'm glad she was able to do it, and safely(?), but told her I wouldn't recommend it (although I did the same on bike with far inferior tires and brakes in the late '70s - 130 on a GS1000G on the North Dallas Tollway at 2 am).

a lot of farm roads are long straights so this makes sense, that said it should have a bit more than that left in it with a light rider. I'll do a top speed run w/gps on my 250 once I've got it street legal this fall

My first run this year I hit 97mph with the recent weight drop on the bike and myself. I figure I've shaved about 60 lbs from last year. 30 off each and I'm still hovering around 200lbs. Had her dyno tested for fun when a buddy was gettin his Harley tuned. 30 horsepower runnin rich. Got some input to raise the needles one clip and drop a few jet sizes, now for a long country road to hit the ton lol

The ones I used were from ebay and look about the same as those. They hardly have anything holding them together where the clamp meets the slot. And I had to bend them to make them work. Very crappy quality. Thats why I asked.
