Idle issue
So bike starts fine and seems to be okay until it warms up then it won't idle. Basically if it's sitting under 3k rpm it will stall. I've cleaned the carbs, turned the air fuel mixture screws out 2 1/2 turns, cleaned the air box, replaced the fuel filter, and I'm getting good fuel flow. I pulled the spark plugs and saw that it's for sure running rich. I checked the float height and it seemed to be good. I'm thinking float valves need to be replaced. Any other ideas?

You sure your carbs are clean? If it's not idling right it could be your pilot/slow jets are still clogged.

I rebuilt the top end so all valves have been adjusted and synched the carbs right after. The bike ran fine for a week and then I started getting this problem. |

Did you pull out the pilot jets and clean them when you had the carbs off?
The Pilot jets are the ones with a slot, set deep down inside the round "tube" in the bottom of the carb, and have a very small opening. |

Yeah I did. I'm going to try taking a guitar string through the inlet of the pilot jet on the actual carburetor. Music shop opens at 10 so I will let you all know how it goes in a couple of hours.

Also, connectors that were removed for the valve adjustment, especially the ones for both spark coils (red goes to the lower connector). Unless it is a fuel supply or water contamination problem, carburetors don't misbehave so dramatically in one week.

Sometimes, one or more valves lose the adjustment quickly after a valve job in the pre-gens, causing idle problems.

Keep an eye on the odor of the oil, just in case you have some sneaky leak of fuel down the crankcase via petcock, floats' valves and intake valves while the engine is off.

Gahhh!! So I took the bike out yesterday and I decided to take it top speed. When I got home though I was going up my driveway and as I was releasing the clutch and opening the throttle it started to bog down and stall. Then trying to start it it will barely start and then when I twist the throttle it will stall. I'm guessing my valve clearance got messed up again after I topped out the bike. All the vibration made it get tight? How tight do I need to make the lock nut when I adjust the valves?

"NOTE: Torque value for tappet locknuts: The original manual says 14.5 ft/lbs. The supplement says 13 ft/lbs. It's recommended to use about 12." Do not over-torque them !!! Read these: http://n4mwd.blogspot.com/2013/06/ov...ts-during.html http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_do_..._the_valves%3F Before attacking the valves again, check that your bowls have enough fuel inside. It sounds like fuel starvation to me (open throttle introduces too much air in the mix because the vacuum in the throttle (Venturi effect) is not able to lift and suck enough fuel from the bowls). It may be a simple plumbing system's problem (check in-line filters and vacuum hoses feeding the petcock for clogging and leaks respectively).

@Motofool yeesh hopefully nothing is damaged. I was looking for a torque spec in my clymber's manual and it just said to secure tightly. Man I really hope it's not bad. So I should use 12 ft lbs?
I have to check the level of gas while its running right? Last futzed with by djjontran; August 17th, 2013 at 12:43 PM. |

Soooo I'm an idiot. I go to pull off the tank to check the valves and realize I have barely any gas in it. Flipped the switch to reserve rode it to a gas station and all is good again. Bahahaha!! I'm a noob.

No, that happens to anyone.
Save the torque info for the next valve adjustment. Ride much and safely !!!

Thanks, Jonathan; it is only that I have been messing with these machines since the 1960s', accumulating some experience at the end of many many mistakes.
There is a lot of awesome members in this forum, younger and older, some post abundantly, some frugally, but there is a lot to learn from each of them. Visit Member of the Month and old threads about repairing and riding and you will find those names easily.
