stupid steering lock question
OK so I hit the kill switch, turn the ignition switch off, put the kick stand down, turn the steering to the left...push in on the ignition key...turn it to the left...
It goes to the left but not all the way to lock. And I can't take the key out. What am I doing wrong?

You aren't doing anything wrong, you just need to move the bars a little bit back to the right, then the key / ignition lock should work. Wiggle the bars a little left / right and you will find the spot.
It's weird but that's it. |

It's all about the wiggle. All bikes seem to do that, must be something with the way those locking mechanisms are typically designed.

This bike is like me, no problems turning it on but if you want to put something in it, you gotta work for it.

by the way, in MSF they taught us to use the red kill switch, but i think its only to instill it in our minds as a reaction in case of an emergency. others claim that the switch wears out over time if u keep using it, and then it REALLY kills your ignition fwiw

I stopped using the kill switch too. I was told by a mechanic not to use it, plus my friend's ZX-10R manual says to use the key, not the kill switch to turn it off.

There is no such thing as a stupid steering lock, just a (you know the rest) using the lock.

The kill switch is meant for emergency situations such as if the clutch cable should break and you need to shut off the engine in a hurry it is easier to reach for the kill switch which is conviniently located within reach of your thumb.

But is there anything wrong with using it on a daily basis (other than the possibility of forgetting to turn the key which could result in a dead battery)?

One thing to remember when your bike won't start, check the kill switch. I see it at bike week and bikeoberfest when there are drunks who don't ride a lot. They kill the battery trying to start a bike with the kill switch on off.

I never use the kill switch unless I'm sitting at a long light, and I flip it back almost right away because if I don't, I'll forget I used it and be sitting there a minute later wondering why the #$%@ my bike won't start.

I use my kill switch every time. I have on all my bikes and all my scooters for years. I have never had one go wrong. The only time I have ever had a kill switch issue was with a gl-500 that I pulled out of a shed after 20 years off the road and all it’s controls were shot. Plus it had one of those old school side to side kill switches not a rocker switch.
So, I don’t think using the switch would be the thing that would worry me. I would worry about not using it and finding out it’s bad when you need it. |

This thread resurrection would be more appropriate closer to Easter...
That said, I've never seen a switch off this sort fail closed. Usually (99.999+%) they fail open. |

I suppose that's how this urban-legend got started. Most people, 99.999+% of them, don't know how to or won't use multimeter to determine if kill-switch is operational. So at least if you always use and wear out ignition-switch first, you'll have confirmation it's bad because lights won't light up when you turn key to ON.
