oil leak after getting off freeway! ??

Well I have a 2001 ninja 250 w/24000 miles on it. I was riding it home, and right before I got home a big cloud of smoke came up and off my bike. And I looked down and my bike from the left side was just pouring oil out. About a quarter of a cup. And then was fine so I drove it home.well I'm wondering, I plugged off the oil breather from the airbox because I just put in k&n drop in air filter. Could that or would that be my reason for the oil coming out and now being fine? BTW I took out the plug after it started to spew and it didn't do it anymore. But idk if that's what the problem was. Thanks in advance.

Yep, good possibility that's your culprit. You need to vent the gearbox. Get a little cheapie filter to cap the gearbox nipple with from your local auto store & you should be fine for that department. Assuming nothing catastrophic happened from this, but since it rode, I *think* you got away with it.

Additionally, refill your oil and see if you can see where the leak was coming from. It's likely the oil blew past a gasket to get out, perhaps for the stator, so that may need replacing, but maybe not. In bypassing it, I don't think it would've been damaged necessarily, but absolutely clean off the area & keep a keen eye on it for a lil while to see if it continues to leak (or from anywhere else).

Haha, not a problem. Sorry I can't give ya more detailed info, but not as familiar with the older model ninjette.

On my new-gen, I've got something like this (picked up for ~$8 from my local auto-mart instead of $35) for my crankcase breather, just attached with a little adapter to the stock S-curved hose that mated to the OEM airbox. Dunno how ya'll are arranged on the '01, but it's at least an idea of whatcha need.

I'd definitely not leave it open unfiltered, as it'll contaminate your oil/gearbox right quick and may spray a fine oil mist all over the bottom of your carbs.

Also, for clarity, I was suggesting you may need to replace the gasket @ the stator if it continues to leak, not the stator itself

No need to plug the crankcase breather with a drop in filter. It really shouldn't be plugged at all. Extra pressure inside the crankcase could possibly blow some seals. Reconnect the hose, clean the engine and check for other possible leaks.

Ya the pre gen has the same S shape so I will do what you did. And I haven't seen a leak after unplugging it so I think I might be fine. thanks again for the responses.

Hopefully, you dodged a bullet. Perhaps the oil blew past either of the 2 screw-in plugs on the left hand side cover, rather than blowing past a sidecase or head gasket.
