[visordown.com] - Campaign demands tougher sentences for drivers who kill
Group aims to stage ride-out A CAMPAIGN group called Bikers for Justice is demanding tougher sentences for drivers who kill motorcyclists. Bikers for Justice says it wants to ‘force the judiciary to rethink how they deal with killers in vehicles’. The group is staging a ride-out in memory 19-year-old motorcyclist Greg Taylor, who was killed when he was struck by an uninsured driver of an unroadworthy car. Niall Darvell, 38, admitted causing death by careless driving and received a six-month jail sentence suspended for two years, with 200 hours' unpaid community work. Taylor’s mother Beverly shouted ‘Do you call that justice, Mr judge?’ as Darvell was spared immediate jail at Exeter Crown Court in October. Darvell’s Volkswagen clipped Taylor’s motorcycle as he overtook on Kings Ash Road in Paignton in the early hours of August 4 this year. The car had a broken wing-mirror at the time. Bikers for Justice says it’s one of several cases in which drivers have received a ‘pittance of a sentence’ over the death of a motorcyclist. The group’s spokesman, Pete Bourner, said: ‘We at Bikers For Justice aim to bring this kind of misjustice to light and force the judiciary to rethink how they deal with killers in vehicles.’ He said the ‘first step’ would be the memorial ride on December 13, leaving Dartington Hall, Totnes, Devon, at 1pm and going to Paignton to lay flowers where Taylor was killed. The ride will then continue to Torquay Crown Court, where the group plans to lay a wreath saying ‘RIP British Justice’. Bourner said: ‘This event is being publicised via Facebook and at present over 100 bikes are expected.’
