Carb Cleaning and Air Box residue?!?

First to get back to my first concerns I ended up changing the oil filter and the petcock and I still had the idling problem; when I had to keep the choke on for the bike to run.

It's finally spring and I took apart the carbs. When I took out the air box there was some residue inside the hole. Some type of black particles. Then when I took out the carbs and looked inside I found this. Is this normal or should I be concerned. They look like the little magnetic shards you get off of magnets colliding??

It seems that your air filter is falling apart.

It sure does. I just replaced mine, because I took it out last week and there was a hole in it! A year ago it looked OK, but last week it was falling apart. I got a genuine Kawasaki replacement from eBay for $8.24 including shipping. It even came pre-oiled.

So should I just replace the air filter and clean the carbs and put it back together or is there more to this?

I think you have it covered. Idle problems are caused by dirty pilot circuits, and those passages and jets are small and need to be very clean to work right. It takes wires poked through the jets and passages, along with carb cleaner or lacquer thinner.
