Is frequent Pop starting a motorcycle bad?
Sometimes after riding in the city for a couple of hours, needing to frequently use my starter, I'll instead just popstart my bike if I'm at the top of a hill. I recently just started doing this, around 5 times in a day, maybe 20 times in a week.
Started doing this just because I'm wanting to dick around on the bike, and a little because I'm afraid I'll eventually burn my starter using my starter roughly 40-50 times a day, 5 days a week. So far though it's got 31,xxx miles and the starter isn't giving me any issues (knock on wood) Is frequent pop starting bad for the bike? |

Starters are much cheaper to replace than clutches and gearboxes....

I "bumpstart" my '72 H2 regularly, and have for 40 years or so, without a problem. The only difference I can think of might be that the 250 engine, being a 4-stroke, might be harder to get spinning, especially if you have to do it in first gear. So if it takes excessive clutch slipping, for example, then it's telling you that it's not a good idea. |

There was a time in the past that bikes did not have a starter and had to rely on a kick starter or pop starting. My opinion is that if you have a working starter you should use it. Imo

I’m curious why OP needs to use his starter 50 times a day? Is he shutting the bike off at each stoplight??

^^ Dude shows San Francisco as his location, has talked about 12 hour riding days and requested info on softer front end before, now talking about 50 starts a day... I'm betting he's delivery/courier of some type.
nocturncal, I wouldn't worry a bit about it. One pop of the clutch to bumpstart the bike isn't going to hurt a thing. The relative speed is laughably low for a rolling bump start, which means the PV-based wear your clutch plates will see from this will be immeasurably small in comparison to regular use. Continue on as you see fit. The flip side here is that the starter motor is really easy to replace so it's not like there's really a ton of benefit or harm either way. The 250 is a very easy bike to bumpstart when the engine is warm. Like... very easy. Even if it's cold, as long as your jetting is good, it can be done without much effort. |

Thousands of compression starts in 3rd (or so) gear won't hurt anything.
