ticking. awful, awful ticking...
information: 27.5k miles
valve adjustment approx. 2000 miles ago (by me). no problems whatsoever. oil change two days ago, then rode it pretty hard (10k for 30 mins on hwy, then about 250 miles of back roads). On the way home, I noticed a ticking while idling. It sounds like a really loud valve, but it's intermittent at idle. There's no noticeable decrease in power and it's not missing on either cylinder. I popped the valve cover off and all the pieces seem to be there and intact (been reading horror stories of people's engines being torn apart by a rocker arm that snapped) but the cam chain seems to have a lot of slack. I'm not sure how much there's supposed to be, so I took some pictures of me pulling the chain up and down. There's not enough for it to skip teeth. Is this cam chain stretched too far or is the ticking probably coming from elsewhere? |

Well.
I think I found the problem. it doesn't do this every revolution, which would explain the intermittant ticking. it's also not coming off of the sprocket. the guide on the front of the case keeps the chain from jumping teeth right there. What should be the next course of action here? |

I'd check your cam chain tensioner, see if that failed in any way. Good luck, & keep us posted.

tensioner isn't the problem. Took it out, cleaned it, reset it, everything went smoothly. There's no change in the tension of the chain though.

What oil were you running most of the time? If the chain tension is set hydraulically by oil pressure you may get more pressure pushing on the chain from the tensioner by running a heavy oil, which in turn could cause it to stretch. As I understand it, over-tensioning is an issue with the stock tensioner. |

Fixed!
it completely skipped my mind to update this thread.
after putting everything back together I took it for a (rather long, ~150 mile) ride and the ticking is completely gone. she purrs like a kitten now and I'm pretty sure that the engine even runs a little better. btw I run rotella t6 in my bike. |
